Unknown error code 508 2.0l blue HDi

Post by 508 gtline »

Engine fault repair needed and service light on.
My local garage diagnostic check came up with error code P15B3 ADDITIVE ADDING.but he doesn't know the meaning.
Has anyone come across this or can analyse the fault and know how to deal with it?
Thanks

The car probably thinks that the Eolys needs topping up. How many miles has the car done?

Someone with better information should be able to tell you exactly what the error code means.

EDIT If it's the 150bhp engine, does this mean that your car has the Adblue system to reduce nitrogen oxides? If so, when was that last refilled? That needs doing every 10,000 to 15,000 miles and is hardly a new system now so is not likely to be the problem.

That fault often requires the Automatic Gearbox ECU software updating (if you have an Auto) and the additive reservoir to be topped up.

Thanks for advice it's 150bhp with 70000miles and ad blue (check button shows enough ad blue) and manual box
Hopefully eolys top up will resolve the issue so I'll go down that Avenue asap

You should really be getting an Eolys additive warning well before it runs out to top it up - unless it has been topped up by a previous owner and the additive counter was not reset of course. In this scenario, the engine ECU would not know the tank had been refilled as it is not physically measured.

This particular warning code does not concern the Adblue system (there are plenty of others for that)!

I would think it unlikely that the Eolys has been previously refilled. Unless the Euro 6 engines use Eolys at a much greater rate than Euro 5 engines such as mine 70,000 miles seems to be quite a low mileage for even a first refill (mine is on just under 68,000).

Sorry about sending the query off course asking about the Adblue. I was just curious.

I've just had a check Paul, and on the DW10FC engine fitted on a 2016 508 with SCR for example, PSA recommend a check of the Eolys additive at 60k miles and thereafter every 20k miles which is less than my Euro 5 emission DW10BTED4 which states to check at 80k miles and then every 20k.

So it may be due to constraints of reduced capacity of the later systems which have to accommodate both a large Adblue tank and additive reservoir.

A year or so ago I had an adblue problem which resulted in a new adblue tank. But all has been well since.
My mechanics can't pin down this error code P15B3.
Engine fault - repair needed flashes up 30 seconds after the engine starts.
Looks like I'll have to go to main dealer

I've read on another thread that every time you put diesel in the system injects an amount of eolys. I tend to put a small amount in every day as apposed to filling up weekly,
Could this be the reason the eolys might be low?

You should NEVER put anything in the fuel tank!

What have you been putting in?

The DPF additive is a VERY specific formulation (probably Powerflex) that must be metered out in exact quantities depending on the amount of fuel added. This is all calculated by the Engine ECU - so if you have been putting other stuff in you could very well of upset it.

And just to be sure we are talking about the same thing as people do get confused:
Adblue is for the SCR system and is filled up periodically by the owner if it has a separate external filler cap.
The Diesel Particulate Additive (Powerflex) tank is only topped up at between 60-80K miles depending on model and engine, or a pouch for systems that don't have a refillable tank.

But you must not add anything in manually otherwise you can destroy the system.

I suggest you abandon that practice immediately and get it to the dealer to check on the error.

I think the OP means that he only puts small amounts of fuel in every time he visits the fuel stations.

If I remember correctly, that used to be an issue on the early cars with a DPF where the filler cap operated a sensor every time it was opened and closed and the system then injected a fixed amount of Eolys rather than measuring how much fuel had been put in. Nowadays, and for quite a while I think, providing you have put at least 10 litres of fuel in (enough so that the system can register the difference on the fuel level) then the system injects a measured amount of Eolys to match the amount of fuel put in.

The only problem there would be if a person to habitually put less than 10 litres of fuel in. And, if I understand the regeneration system properly, would only then be a problem if the car isn't driven fast enough for an unassisted regeneration.

I'm sorry I brought up the Adblue. It doesn't appear to be a factor in this error other than the fact that Adblue cars need checking for calculated Eolys level earlier than non-Adblue systems.

I only put diesel in the fuel tank - nothing else ever.
How can I find out if my vehicle has a pouch or refillable tank for eolys?

Oh, my bad it that's the case - apologies if that's what was meant.

The fuel is always measured once when the car is stopped and again on start off - if it's within a certain amount I believe it uses the last position on the instrument panel, but over a certain amount it corrects - I did do a piece on this somewhere in the past, but can't remember where now.

Thanks
I can't understand, if eolys is low would the engine management light not come on instead of the service light as on my car?
