Fuel Consumption for the 1.6Hdi

I bought my C5 X7 Tourer with the 1.6Hdi because of a plethora of reasons, but I've never been sure I should have gone for a 2.0Hdi for better out-of-town performance.

However, today it went on a 350-mile run and performed rather well.

So to translate to imperial:

49mph average speed | 57.6mpg | 348.5 miles on this trip | 176,856 miles on the clock

Is that good? I would be curious to know other members' mpg figures.

Personally, I keep meticulous records of all my mpg and have done so since 2014 on my last 3 cars. I didn't post it here because it seems a bit too anorak-y or borderline OCD.

That sounds pretty good. Fuel consumption depends largely on how and where you drive. I drive the 2.0. and rarely drive much over 60 mph or 2000 rpm but I have had 70+ mpg on the motorway especially in long 50 mph limits. I live and drive mostly in the country and find consumption is considerably better in the summer. My overall average for the last 6000+ miles has been 47 mpg but I get 60+ on any motorway journey.

Now that's impressive. I always thought smaller displacement engines would be more economical, but they usually lack that effortlessness on the motorway, and your experience with the 2.0Hdi seems to bear this out. Question: do you get a lot of hilly terrain or is it nice and flat?

It's pretty hilly round here, hence the 47 mpg average but the main roads and motorway are reasonably flat. I usually get around 60 going to Exeter, the A30 is pretty flat but its hilly getting there, but high 50s on the return journey as Exeter is almost at sea level, we are at 500'. As I said the best figures are obtained in the summer, the temperature makes quite a difference.

ive just bought a 2.0hdi xantia cause im fed up with my 1.8 auto doing 35mpg if im carefull

If you want good fuel consumption the first thing to avoid is an auto, they break too, manuals generally don't.

Oh, yes. Especially older ones. I drive various land-rovers at work and one is a Disco with the Td5 engine and auto gearbox. It makes our Defenders with the same engine seem frugal by comparison!
