Don't forget, you can drop the 1.9 lump into the bay of the 1.7s too, so an uprated 205 or 309 TD, maybe a Visa! (car not card), C15, Rover 218. You could even think further a field and convert an old 306 cabrio or 205 CJ/CTi to diesel power, cool derv burning for the summer. The 205 is a sound option, buy a Dturbo mot failure, rip the looms and dash bits out, drop in the CJ, with your XUD turbo lump, off for a rolling road tune up and pee off a few Nova chavs. <g>

if you're re-fitting a xantia TD engine where a knackered Diesel engine has come out, you can move just about all the brackets/pumps etc. from the old engine onto the new one. The only major difference that is difficult to change is whether the engine has a pulley on the end of the camshaft, a drive-dog for a later-style vacuum pump (only on non-hydropneumatic cars), or (I believe) a blanking plug. Everything else is bolt-on.

The 1.9 TD puled the Xantia very nice and when the turbo kicked in it went like a rocked well i did drive a 1.0L before i got the Xantia. But then i had to go and spoil it all and hit a tractor (long story). So putting the 1.9 TD into a 205 would make an ausom pocket rocket. (Just not very easy to do).
I had a 205 1.0 Jr as my first car it was a nice car in town just had no poke so i got the Xantia for £900

If you do the mods it will go into a BX, I know because I have one[:D]
Its not too difficult if you have the experience and skills and they do perform very well indeed, a ZX might be an easier option though or a 205, in either case you will need to sort out the vac pump drive and would be easiest to fit a cam from an older 405TD or BX TD with a pulley on the end to drive either the HP pump or the older type belt driven vac pump, to fit the later vac pump you would need to drill and tap the head in EXACTLY the right place to mount the pump and I am unsure about ther being the right lugs on the end of the camshaft.
