Plus Gas has been going for several days now and the next trick I shall try is carefully applied heat... I have a powerful propane torch with a fine pencil flame that should do the job and not set fire to anything nearby!

Always a worry using stud extractors in case one breaks half way through the job and gets stuck in there... Trying to remove the remains of a broken nipple and a broken stud extractor is a right royal PITA

My experience of stud extractors has never been good...

If I do break a nipple I'll drill it out and retap. And if that fails, turn up one of my patent adaptors on my lathe... One piece of advice I saw was to Helicoil it... Back in my biking days I had a Helicoil kit and it saw loads of use

One of two essential things when you ran Japanese motorbikes... The other, which I still have, was an impact driver!

On another topic, I've just renewed my photocard driving license on-line using my passport - it uses my passport photo and avoids a trip to the Post Office and loosing the will to live

The remined letter said all you needed was your passport and a credit card... It neglected to mention you also needed your current photocard license, your NI Number and inside leg measurement!

The whole process, with all information you need to hand took around 10 minutes...

Alternate heat and then quench with plus gas, tap the spanner with your hand rather than constant torque. Got the nipples out of a pair of Xantia rears that l had previously had to saw the pads in half to get them out!!

Watch out as the plus gas catches fire when you reapply the heat

I sheared a bleed nipple off on my Renault 14. Spent god knows how long drilling it out and re-tapping then reseating it to take a larger nipple.
Sheer stupidity when a replacement caliper from a scrappy would have been cheap, quick and easy.

Yep...I spent the best part of an afternoon fighting with one on the Invacar before thinking to see how much new wheel cylinders were. £14 for proper Girling ones...suffice to say the battle ceased at that point!

It was guided at 10k so I'm guessing the reserve was in the 9-10k range. Certainly very strong but it was fully restored and in cracking condition, described as "probably the best R4 in the UK' and I'm pretty sure Derek isn't sponsored by Carlsberg!

At that price, I concur! Just checked the price and availability of AX calipers and I'm looking at the thick end of £50 each so at that price it's worth doing all I can to save them...

Yesterday I joined a virtual challenge commencing on 1st January 2021...

: LEJOG 2021

Only I'm doing the double... There and back... I have a year in which to do it

I've almost done the mileage require this year and that's despite being 'on the bench' for 12 weeks...

I did a training run for LEJOG today...

: Saturday Run

This run marked day 61 of my current run streak (number of runs on consecutive days) and is special as it's also my age (61) and my 8th half marathon in 8 consecutive weekends

It was a bit damp and windy out there this morning... Very mild though...

No, Derek strikes me as being pretty down to earth, knowledgeable and not given to hyperbole

I'll be looking forward to seeing the episode on catchup featuring that R4

You continue to amaze me Jim, but I have to say that route looks like a contestant to rival the Nurburgring (the original one) so purely for curiosity did you run clockwise or anti-clockwise around it?
