Stupid Idea... Berlingo V6 Conversion

Post by DHallworth »

Well, thanks to Covid, I'm roughly half way through the middle of my 2 weeks at home.

Cheryl tested positive which means neither of us have been able to leave the house, and as she's been feeling rotten and spent most of the week in bed or under a blanket on the couch, she's not been able to keep me in check...

As a result, I've done something that on the surface seems to be pretty bloody stupid...

Last night I started to moot the idea of a V6 Berlingo... I now have a Berlingo to use for the conversion and am sitting trying to work it out.

The Berlingo I have agreed to collect is a 2002 2.0 HDi, Non Multiplexed.
The C5 that I have is a 2002 3.0 V6 Exclusive which is Multiplexed.

I know this conversion has been done before as I've seen some bits online about it but there's not an awful lot of information out there.

So, I know I need a Gearbox and flywheel from a manual 406 as well as a clutch.

The engine mounts and driveshafts I'm unsure of, I reckon the V6 shafts would need to be used but they'd need shortening and welding up.

Cooling system wise, I'm sure I could fabricate some brackets and use the radiator and pipework from the C5 V6 that I've got.

The biggest thing that's worrying me is getting the engine to run in a non-multiplexed Berlingo.

Anybody got any thoughts or ideas?

David.

The Berlingo has been multiplexed since around 2000 (late mk1 models), these are only part multiplexed with comfort VAN only. The mk2 model from around 2002 was fully multiplexed with VAN/CAN systems (same as a mk1 C5).
The mk3 from around 2007 was a Full CAN system.

This one is a 2002 but has the earlier windscreen wiper stalks on it as per the 306 so no comms unit behind the steering wheel.

Only part multiplexed then.
You could have the immobiliser taken off the V6 ecu which would allow the engine to run in theory without the matching BSI & key but dont think it would talk to the instrument panel for gauges etc.

I wonder if the older non multiplexed V6 would be more sensible rather then the unit from the C5 then.

Well, you can't really use "Sensible" in the same sentence as any of this...

At least nobody has suggested fitting a Jaguar V12 engine (with twin turbochargers) in the back of the Berlingo, like the Ford Transit that Richard Hammond drove in "Top Gear". Oops!

If you get the ECU unlocked to run stand-alone, then adding sensors compatible with the non-multiplexed car should not be too difficult.

OTOH, on club-xm.co.uk there is an ES9 XM with manual conversion about to be scrapped.

I'm so sorry to hear David, having been there I know exactly how Cheryl feels and all best wishes for her rapid recovery back to full health...

David.
When I have a sore throat I find that (for me, at least) peppermint tea with a teaspoon of cough syrup (black treacle based) helps. It sounds strange, and not everybody likes it, but the warmth helps the syrup, while the tea is one that tastes good when it is hot or cold. Poundland do Bells' Cough Linctus, and that is the one I use (the Dry Tickly Cough syrup from Bells does not mix well though).
