Left in the lurch!

Post by Forrester123 »

I have a C5 '57 estate & had a run out today to Kemble airfield. This is where the 747's are going, to be scrapped & it was sad to see so many historic aircraft being stripped down.
Come the time to leave, turned the key & nothing. Engine dead!
Lights on dash illuminated but everything not working.
Checked battery & that was fine [12.4v] I then called B/D company. When he arrived he tried his small hand held tester & said it was in limbo. Tried a push start to no avail, so on the truck it went, to be returned to a home garage .Due to C/19, we were not allowed in B/D truck ,so the insurance co. organised & paid for a taxi
home. Excellent service from Eversure.
So, has anyone a suggestion as to the problem?

Are you getting a power feed at the starter solenoid whey the key is turned to the crank position? Tried a temporary earth between the battery & engine block using a jump lead?Checked all the fuses?
What did the small hand held tester actually test for?

I'm 83 years old & am past diving into engine bays! However, thanks for replying.
The car is now at my local garage & I just thought that, maybe, some one had a similar experience, so I could advise them.

I would get the garage to check the battery thoroughly as it can affect a multitude of things.

Got the car back today & was told the no.8 fuse had blown [25 amp].
Garage worried at what caused the failure as it covers more things than the starter motor.
Got some spare fuses in case it happens again.

It will depend on your engine and options, but there si an F8 in the BSI and an F8 in the engine bay fuse box.

F8 in the BSI (20A) and is for the Switch module at the steering wheel - Trailer relay unit - multifunction screen - suspension control unit - audio system - Radiotelephone transceiver
F8 in the Engine Fuse Box (20A) is for the Starter Motor

There's a long sequence of events that happen before starting is allowed, but succinctly, if there is no power to the Steering Wheel Switch Module, then it can't power the transponder coil, nor send the data back and forth to the BSI for handshaking and authentication, so you'll never get it to unlock the engine ECU.

My Picasso was doing the same about 3 weeks ago , I took the cowling off around the steering wheel to find it was that low due to lose screws is was holding the key back and the chip wasn't being picked up, before that it would crank but not fire up, that was cured by replacing cracked hoses that run across the diesel injector's, that xured that ,then 2 weeks after this it throw up an immobilizer fault on the dash read out ... So removing the cowling around my steering wheel checking connections and doing all back up worked for me.

Last month a chap in front of me couldn't get his Skoda started his issue was the steering lock was still partly engaged and that stopped the car from doing anything , so I said to him pop the key back in wiggle the wheel so the lock is off he did and then it all came to life and fired up,
Car was 3 years old he admitted he was still learning about The car then told me he was in early stages of Parkinson's !

Hope yours gets sorted and don't cost to much.
