Eminently sensible and were you to suggest otherwise I can foresee - ructions!

Aldi presumably don't do what you need. I was going either there or Lidl later. Never know which one it will be until I get there but will have a look.

Would it be possible to buy an alternatively packaged slab and hack it up and store in 'Tupperware' type containers - or resealable plastic 'sandwich bags'?

I sometimes get cheese in resealable bags - Cathedral City or a similar (better, cheaper) one from FarmFoods and cut the damned things open, chuck the bag and clingwrap the cheese, the bags are a nightmare to open and worse to close.

Here is the second email from Tesco which came in yesterday:

Hello Mick,

Thank you again for your reply.

I’m sorry you’re unhappy and I do appreciate your concerns. We're doing everything we can to support all our customers and colleagues right now.

I’m afraid I can’t add anything to my previous reply but I have shared your feedback with the right people and we will do our best to keep improving.

Kind regards,

John Bradley

Customer Service Specialist
On behalf of the Chief Executive’s Office

At least it says he has put my concerns to the "right people" so I guess that's the best I could hope for.

As regards buying my cheese and then storing it in tupperware or sandwich bags, that is what I will have to do and since tupperware is generally out of favour in our house it will be zip closing poly bags which I will have to transfer the cheese to from its non reusable packaging. So be it, but it does mean an overall increase in the use of plastic as I will only use a bag for one block and then use a fresh one for a fresh block. That will prevent the unseen hazard of plasticizing which we have been told about countless times with our plastic bottles!! :( :)

The problem Tesco and their like have is the constant pressure form 'greenies' and the dolt Jamie Oliver to cut out anything the works and to get their share of the problem down to zero.

JO has waged war on sugar and salt the two most natural of preservatives in existence.

Not too long ago it was 'E numbers' didn't matter what they meant they just had to be bad.
Man is, by nature, a lazy beast, he does not need twice encouraging to do nothing.

Lidle had nothing to suit you Mick. Only Double Gloucester was a tiny bit with chives embedded in it.

Talking about plastics reminds me that a friend was studying at University. She was asked to write a short article (500 words, I think) on the effects of BPa plastic. She (and my cousin) were talking about it, and I was listening (and, hopefully, making useful comments). When I got home I wrote the following (I don't know the relevant medical condition, so I just used XXX to mark the relevant spot, so if they decided to use it they could);

"BPa has a similar effect on egg production as the genetic condition XXXXX. However, as BPa is an artificial condition (as opposed to a genetic condition) once exposure to BPa is removed subsequent egg production is not damaged.

The effects of BPa can be summarised thus. Should an expectant mother (A) be exposed to BPa (this is the only exposure during this summary) the eggs being produced by a developing female foetus (B) are at a greater risk of being damaged. The foetus (B) herself could be said to be healthy, but she has a greater risk of non-viable foetuses. However, should this foetus (B), when adult, become viably pregnant a female foetus (C) would not be affected by the aforementioned exposure to BPa, and neither would any subsequent generations.

Note; by the fact that, when exposure to BPa is removed, and only eggs produced during that exposure are damaged, it can be clearly shown that BPa is not retained within cells (including eggs), otherwise egg production would continue to be damaged even when external source BPa has been removed from the environment (as BPa retained within the cells would, in decreasing amounts, pass down through the generations)."

It would appear there is more than 1 consideration to take into account to solve this problem.
1. SWMBO does the shopping ( this i feel is important to Mick :) ) and distance travelled
2. The quantity and storage available
3. Storage space limited and what type of wrapping/container is used.

1. Part 1 no comment, part 2 is where there is wriggle room ( gonna cost Mick though ).
2. Have a look at your local farm shops etc they will more than likely be able to cater for the quantity needed and be able to cut it into the size needed. From memory a block of cheese is approx 5kg ( cheddar ) from the dairy ( 35 yrs ago ) but they do sell them in smaller blocks 2-3kg.
3. Space look at #2 wrapping/container whatever Mick ( sorry SWMBO ) decides :)

Your mention of Farm Shop had me wondering.
Google indicates several near me, this being the closest.

Knitsley Farm Shop

They don't specify which types of cheese or quantities available.

Deli.

I may have to venture out there and pose further investigations. Will have to acquire a meerschaum and deerstalker.

Thanks for that analysis Colin which has useful points. I feel I should clarify one thing though as I wouldn't want people to get the wrong idea. SWMBO insists on doing the shopping which means she drives to the supermarket, walks round with the trolley filling it from the mutually prepared list, then asks for assistance to pack at the tills and into the boot. She then returns to the cafe to have a cup of tea or an iced yoghurt and put the world to rights with other members of the "TWMBO" club. She then drives home and on opening the front door calls "I'm back!" which actually means "Could you get the bags from the car, bring them indoors, unpack and put away the things, organising the fridge and cupboards as you go, put the bags back in the car and the car in the garage and then make us a nice cup of tea while I put my feet up please?"

The thing is I wouldn't want it any other way as I keep control of the storage and prevent overloading which used to drive me mad with my ex-wife as well as park the car far enough over to allow me to walk down beside it when I want something from the shelf at the back!! :-D

As regards the farm shops I will go and have a look in the one we have but I am dubious as to whether they will sell DG which is my dietary preference. :-D

:rofl2:

Your wife sounds an eminently sensible woman. Does the required but doesn't make it her life's work.

My wife wouldn't go shopping, except for kid's clothes, she didn't trust me with that and didn't care about the rest.

She could make a banquette from a box of rice crispies and two carrots. I suspect that sorcery was involved as I can only produce carrot flavoured cereal.

I have to agree Steve she is indeed eminently sensible and totally logicless!! However to clarify she is not my wife as we both agreed that marriage hadn't worked for either of us first time so why do it again? That was 14 years ago and we're still going strong so possibly the right decision.

She is a lovely lady, born in New Zealand and now she is a naturalised Brit having been here since the mid 70s. She worked for the NHS for 35 years as a mental health nurse rising to being the manager of the Hitchin Mental Health Unit and now working, since her retirement, in the community as a mental heath assessor. She is absolutely brilliant in dealing with the elderly, disadvantaged and underprivileged "service users" but hopeless at cooking, organising or anything involving a keyboard.

She has the disadvantage of being highly susceptible to static electricity and has caused more blue screen events on her pc at work than the IT support group could cope with. She has an earth wrist strap connected to the radiator in our study since she blew up her 3rd PC a year after I moved in and I implemented that solution. It has worked as we have had no further similar issues.

If you have time on your November Meander you might want to go Rudgwick, near to Horsham. There is a place that does a very nice (but not cheap) Cheese. They also do a few other things (and there is another farm nearby that is supposed to do a good range of meat).
