Re: P.E.Jukebox-your selections please

So I thought I would try to dig out a decent version of the American National Anthem (see Mick's Stroll thread today). Difficult as most singers tend to over emotionalise and to put it mildly screech and shout to my ears. Hendrix did of course do his own instrumental version. Going back to the original composition I thought that an instrumental version on a pipe organ would be the most appropriate.

A couple, one on the largest pipe organ in the world, and the one which shows the footwork better. I think thats my preference.

I am of course heavily biased with this one. As Neil said, it is frequently ruined by overenthusiastic and dramatic warblers.
Just sing it straight.

11 years old!

13 years old!

She did it for trump but the American networks contrived to ruin it. The Australians got it as it should have been.

16 years old, and after she had been kept waiting in the freezing cold for two hours.

A bit long but a trial at nine years old.
Starts at 3' 35" if you want to miss the preamble.

As it seems to be my doing that got us into The Star Spangled Banner I thought I'd offer my two penneth :-D :

As far as the organ versions go, I think the complexity of the instrument hides the classic simplicity of the piece but if I had to pick I'd choose the first option.
Now Steve's secret love is a different matter altogether, her incredible tonal control makes her an ideal candidate to sing the song and her rendition at 9 years old I found amazing, but not her best effort. For me the recording at 13 tops the offerings from Steve but I can't really say exactly why, it just seemed to have that little bit more!

Now for my preferred version, because the song is so simple, yet so powerful, and has such meaning in the lyrics harping back to the civil war I think it needs to be played as a solo on an instrument appropriate to the times! I have therefore selected the Harmonica as the ideal instrument as it conjures up the image of fighting men in American fields in the 18th century. I have trialled some 20 odd harmonica versions which is why it has taken so long to post this, but I think the one I have picked epitomises the emotions I am referring to:

Having heard that you may find it amusing and revealing to see what Metallica did with the song :-D :

I used to be indecisive, now I'm not so sure!

I agree that her version at 11 is the better one and like you can't define why.
The one at 9 is impressive inasmuch as she was just a happy little kid larking around until she started to sing - acapella and in an acoustically difficult environment. Also, she was still technically only 8 then.

The harmonica one is quite poignant and fitting. Not many are.

With reference to the Civil War, this always is associated with it although it was never intended that way when written.
Ashokan Farewell.

There is an excellent version by the band of the Royal Marines.

There's one or two radio shows that I dont mind giving the time of day to. Strangely one of these is Liza Tarbuck on a Saturday on radio 2, I can see how the "banter" part of it could grate but more often than not she has a decent selection of music on. I also give Elaine Page on Sunday with her musical theatre stuff a bit of slack, and in general enjoy the music. So I heard this on Sunday from the musical "Rent" powerful song if a bit shouty in parts. There are maybe better versions but this is the one we heard...

I have said previously that I can't stand musicals and broadway shows.

Naturally my current favourite is from "Rent".

Not by anyone else though.

From my encounter with a heron to Gil Scott Heron, and the superb Brian Jackson on Flute

Never heard much Gil Scott Heron so started with "Winter in America" dig it out for the flute bits alone.

Then I had a delve into Brian Jackson. I like performances where musicians are enjoying themselves. Brian is on keyboards here and doesnt pick up the flute at all. Not the greatest singer but the keyboard work and the bass and drums are excellent and there is a joy in the performance and the performers! :-D

Got to agree about the enthusiasm there Neil, also I was fascinated by the 5 string base which I haven't heard much. While doing my own digging I came across this which I found fascinating too! :-D :

As I mentioned on the TV Thread
this is what happens when you put a great voice with an epic guitarist (not to Steve's taste I fancy :-D ) which I came across channel hopping for the news this morning:

Marvin Gaye's a bit loud for me but here's a proper singer, this should make a few of our Welsh friends on here happy. :)
