I don't know whether I'm above averagely cack handed (almost certainly), but whenever I take the interior trim panel off a Xantia door, I almost always break the little tab off the grippy bit that holds the lock button in place.
So then it's off to Citroen to buy another complete button, part number 96 029 296 ZL (front) or 9159 71 (rear). The front ones are about 7 quid each now.
For a while I've been searching for a better alternative, and now I've found two !
First of all, I found someone on eBay selling just the "grippy bit"
Seller: the_stop_shop_uk
Price, £12.67 for 8, including delivery
They're perfect; indistinguishable from the originals. They're marketed by a French company, Restagraf, so I assume they come from the original manufacturers.
Secondly, I bought some complete buttons that have a different fixing altogether, a metal insert and a screw.
These came from Aliexpress.com, at £5.86 for 4, delivered.
Just search for "STARPAD Citroen car door lock"
I tried one today and fits perfectly
Result !
Both of these are only suitable for the front doors; the rear ones are narrower, but for me, that's 90% of the problem solved.

Might try those for the XM, which uses a similar button, a similar nuisance.

Re: A fix for broken Xantia door buttons
The Ali-Express buttons arrived, and have fitted one to the XM.
It works really well.
Did need to quickly clean up the inside of the metal insert hole with a needle file; a bit of a burr there stopped the rod going though.
Really good copies of the originals, and ingenious.
Wonder how on earth these came about?
