M59 Berlingo rust repair

Unread post by jimbo84 »

No so much a repair but an attempt at delaying.

On the M59 I've noticed they seem to rust at the bottom of the panel behind the left hand front door, I've seen bad ones where the panel has completely gone through.

Mine had started and was wet in that area, I think it's just condensation that runs down and sits there rather than draining through the drain holes. There were also a couple of areas towards the back doors too, on both sides. My plan is to build in some drawers so this area would be fully covered and not easily accessed later.

This is the area

And this is the spot by the back doors (after going over with a wire wheel)

Other side was similar but not as bad.

Wire wheeled it all, hoovered out the dust and then applied a coat of rust converter, this was the one I went for,

Once it's started to convert it turns purple

After a few hours it's overpaintable. Coated it in a tractol primer which I've used on countless things over the years and found it very good.

Followed by a top coat of tractol machinery enamel to finish.

This should all slow down the spread. I will fill the cavity with a wax/diesel mix through the drain holes to slow any down that is under the panel.

And while I was at it a new spare wheel carrier hook was needed due to the old one rusting solid. Some flat bar knocked to shape and a nut welded on.

Very nice! Its always good to see preventative maintenance when it comes to rust.

I must admit one of my favourite features of PSA cars is that they tend to survive rust very well. I can honestly say my 12 year old X7 hasn't got a spec of rust underneath.

The 17 year old Mk. 1 that I just scrapped had no rust either and there was unrepaired damage to the boot and wing with exposed metal, been like it for several years and not a hint of rust anywhere.

This one has got some rust in places underneath but nothing major. The french vehicles do seem good against rust.

Before I got this I was looking at the transit connects, same age and newer to the berlingo looked like they'd been sat in the ocean for a year, frightening how bad they are underneath but fords have been like that for years. The berlingo is smaller than I wanted but decided to trade off the small difference in size to avoid spending the rest of the vehicles life chasing the tin worm.

I'm not sure on it but I think they galvanise the bodies before painting which helps a lot.

I’ve been keeping an eye on the underside of my 2008 C8 (pretty much the same as Dispatch/Jumper) and only recently have I had to treat a couple of minor rust areas. On the other hand I was working underneath a friend’s 10 year old Ford Transit that was riddled with rust.

Too often we hear of some people slagging off the French cars yet Ford rust and many of the German cars’ unreliability rarely get a mention. Grrrr !!!
