2006 307 SW 1.6 Petrol Starting Issues

Late last year my daughter's car began blowing the 20A starting circuit fuse occasionally when turning the key to start. Replacing the fuse, and no more problems for a time.

This was happening more and more often, and I replaced the starter motor/solenoid in April this year. The car's been fine....until last week.

The fuse wasn't blowing, but turning the key often produced nothing more than a click. Cycle off and on for a couple more turns and the car would eventually fire up.

It seemed much better with a newish battery to temporarily replace the existing (5-year old) one, so I fitted a new Varta one anyway......but the problem persists.

There are no faults showing on Diagbox. Admittedly, the starter I fitted was an ebay £50 cheapie.

Any advice welcome.

That sounds like thats your answer.
Dont be tempted by the price of the euro car parts RTX brand starters either. I have know these starters/alternators to fail the same day they were fitted & also straight out the box.

Yeah, I've been thinking the same thing. Thought it was worth a punt, as she'll be changing the car next year.

Buy cheap, buy twice maybe.

As it starts eventually, would you think the problem now might be in the solenoid rather than the motor itself? I've still got the OEM unit I took off, and (if it fits) I'm wondering if it's worth trying the old solenoid on the new motor. Just a thought.

Sounds like the big contacts in the solenoid, you could strip it & either clean or see if the old ones are better.

I fitted a 60 pound cheapie to my 2.0.Hdi C5 and its fine. I fit 'cheapie' most things and rarely have a problem. If you closely study the pictures on ebay you will find that one firms 'cheapie' is another firms 'quality product' with prices to match.
