More misfortune

Post by doctle »

Some of you may know I bought a Ford Focus estate as I couldn't find a 307 SW locally. I serviced it fettled it, brought the wheels to get new tyres booked the NCT (MOT) etc then I was messing with it and decided to cut the grass. Put the key in my pocket and on the return mow I shredded the key. I found everything but the chip and battery. Mobile locksmith want's the price of the car to come out Ford wants more than that so I'm thinking of getting this. I could maybe code the key and resell it, that's the thinking. Has any of you guys ever used this device and did it work, the scrap value of the focus is less than the cost of the filters I bought when I serviced it!

Use something like this to stick it all back together and do another search for the missing parts.

I'd buy a metal detector and find bits of the damn thing. I will attempt to code the key myself its an old car how difficult can it be. Those machines fetch good money second hand be harder to sell a used metal detector :)

I have the original SBB (I didnt realise there was an SBB2) Its ok for older cars, compatibility really depends on the car, Some models will only do late 90's stuff but for Citroen it does up to 2008. What year is yours? Mines only does Focus up to 2002. You dont normally need a security code for Fords.

it's a 2006. Ford wants €600 to send a man out to cut and code a key even though I don't want or need a key cut. Mobile locksmith said €300-400 depending on the time it took and again said he had to cut a new key. I paid €350 for the car so I'm reluctant to spend this type of money. I rang a breaker and he said maybe €60 for the whole car. Same breaker charge you €75 for a used alternator.

WOW  That's a ridiculous price for a key even if it did need cut.
Here I would expect to pay around £150 - £170 for a mobile locksmith to supply, Cut & program a complete remote key for this car.

EDIT: Just checked with a local locksmith, To supply, cut & program a complete 3 button remote key for this car. £130 for one key or £180 for 2 keys. Thats a mobile service within 20 miles of his base.

It's been quite a time since I had to have one made but the guy came to my place cut and programmed the key for a 2004 C5 for £90 then knocked off 10% pensioner's discount.
That was Jock the Lock who at the time served South Wales and West Gloucestershire.

There was one guy who said he would make and code a key for €150 trouble is he's 60 miles away. The cheapest recovery guy I could find charges €1 per km plus €50 waiting time, add the cost of the key cup of coffee and a sandwicg and there's no change out of €420 or so.

So the device arrived, armed with a new fob ignition on I plugged it in. It only does Focus up to 2002 it's on the way back to the seller tomorrow and I'm left choosing between a locksmith and a Megane, Megane being not much dearer than the locksmith.

So it looks like the only difference between the SBB & the SBB2 is the colour of the casing?
Is there any option of a similar year Fiesta, Mondeo or C-max you could try?
