Did Citroen make a.....
.... Space saver wheel suitable for slinging under the Xantia?
Its currently got a standard steel rim with a 185 section tyre on it and frankly with the towbar in situ its a bloody pain to get the wheel on or off the cradle.
Toyed with the idea of fitting a 165 section tyre to see if that improved matters, but just wondered if any of the PSA cars has a space saver which would fit.
Similar problem with the BX - though not quite as bad owing to the skinny 165 tyres it currently wears.

Why's that! Mine has a 205 on the cradle and it comes off OK.

It catches the londitudinal beam of the towbar, then its actually a very tight fit trying to hook the catch over the cradle, a skinny tyre will give me more room to manuver(sic)as presnetly with the 185 the tyre is hard pressed against the floorpan and still its a bloody tight fit.
I wonder if the hook bolt has been shortened in the past to fit the towbar (Bosal).
Stuart - only problem there mate is that the Xantia is running on 15's and the BX on 14's. Would be a little un-ballanced.

Probably safer than one of those "space saver" spares, I am back to an 185 steel for a spare, I have a spare alloy one but its just too fat to easliy use, same problem, you need a jack under the cradle to get the hook on, and its too close to the towbar, still,we fashion concious BXers wouldnt be seen with odd wheels for long would we

TBH Dave - if the wife gets a flat she would use the Tyreweld (Im a great believer in the voodoo power of Tyreweld in keeping the car free from punctures by simply having a tin in the boot)
Its just if I want to use the spare its a bugger to get on / off. And you can guarentee the next flat I have will be on a muddy country lane in the pouring rain.
28 Years driving - your never that old.
Pretty sure the car has never been rear ended (everything very straight and no new welding or ripples to boot floor) - probably just the make of towbar - the one I fitted to the ZX had exactly the same problems (cheepo Towsure patern one) and that had never been rear ended either.

Curiously our Zx 1.9D has 175/65 x 14 tyres (same as my BX) but has a 165 x 14 spare. It has steel wheels so thats not the reason. Marty I wonder if your xantia is meant to have a smaller one and someone has put a used full size one in there?
Incidentally my BX 16valve has a 165 x 14 on a special steel wheel that takes 'alloy' bolts.

My Xantia spare is a 185/65 15 steel wheel where as the car is on alloys of the same size. The spare is original and has special inserts because it has to be used with the alloy wheel bolts with flat washers, its unused and still has the sticker on the tread. My older Xantia has a 165/70 14 spare, but its wheels/tyres are 185/65 14 steels.
The newer car has a bigger wheel, so the cradle must also be bigger and it has the towbar too. Access on the older one is most probably luxurious in comparison to the newer one....

A kwik search on a certain tyre-n-exhaust outfit's website brings up one tyre for 165/70R14, none for 165/65R14 and several for 175/65R14. (is the 165 a 70 or 65 profile)
The reason could be simply because at some point when it came to replacing they tyres it was easier/cheaper to fit the bigger size. Assuming your ZX isn't still on it's original rubber.[:o)]
