That's the Higginbottom Fountain Mick. I could take us back to Newcastle with a link to that, but I'll leave the next link to others.

Higginbottom , supplied whisky, including his Club Blend, to British troops during the Boer War and the First World War.

Re: The Chain...make the next link
Well with no offers as yet to make the next link in the Chain. The chain has to move on so I am going to take it Via Higginbottom from the Higginbottom Fountain in Wanganui to Newcastle and Higginbottoms club blend Whisky, to another drink Guinness.
Higginbottom also locally bottled Guinness in Newcastle supplied in bulk from the Park Royal Brewery London.

Regards Neilhttp://desdemoor.co.uk/guinness-park-royal-brewery/
"Unlike historic industrial British brewers, Guinness never pursued a policy of acquiring a pub estate, instead relying on the distinctiveness of its beer and the strength of its brand to ensure it became a ‘must-stock’ in pubs owned by other brewers. For decades it often strengthened its partnerships with potential competitors by selling its beer in bulk for other brewers to bottle for sale in their own outlets.

While we are at the Park Royal Brewery, now obliterated from the industrial landscape, its interesting to have a nose around. 23 Pictures in this gallery from "Forbidden-Places.net" Like the stairwell (4) and the silent machinery with the bold makers name "Brotherhood Ltd Peterborough England" (21)

I remember the brewery well, the smell of hops and malt when you drove by was quite intoxicating by itself!! Now from a gallery on Park Royal to a gallery in a Royal Park. The serpentine gallery has some intrigueing offerings for your perusal:

Re: The Chain...make the next link
I watched a documentary some time ago about Christo and Jean-Claude who did the mastaba of coloured oil drums on the serpentine. Many many links all over the world for their grand scale art installations.
Some time before that in 2012 I had my first experience of an Electric Bike in Hyde Park ' Leaned the bike up against the serpentine bridge and there was Vincent van Gogh capturing the moment.
So pick something out of that for another link

Re: The Chain...make the next link
Time to make the next link in the chain. So I'll take us to Central Park New York City.
One of the art installations by the pair who did the oil drums on the Serpentine was in Central Park called the Gates.
https://christojeanneclaude.net/projects/the-gates
aand it gives us the opportunity for a bit of quizing and finding out.

One of my favourite Artists on what I consider to be her masterpiece album "Hejira" in one of the tracks she wraps her lyrics around some "New York" places so.....
How many skaters were on Wollman Rink
Where did she go to buy herself a Mandolin

Re: The Chain...make the next link
You can Mick from one of my Joni favourites "Song for Sharon" from Hejira. The Mandolin place on Staten Island is Mandolin Brothers and as well as Joni has been frequented by Bob Dylan Paul McCartney Paul Simon and others.
The shop is closed down now, but still has an on-line presence

Re: The Chain...make the next link
Another fact that intrigued me about Staten Island is:
"From 1964 to 1977, Staten Island contained the longest vertical lift, steel arch, and suspension bridges in the world: the Arthur Kill Vertical Lift Bridge, Bayonne Bridge, and Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge, respectively. The Arthur Kill Bridge still holds the title for longest vertical lift bridge, while the Bayonne and Verrazzano bridges are now the 5th- and 14th-longest in their respective categories."
However if you find yourself on Staten Island there is a good chance you will recognise this:
The question is where will it take the chain?

Re: The Chain...make the next link
So finally the penny drops and the question of what on earth has Barry White got to do with Staten Island, or its ferry
falls into place.
So from the Staten Island Ferry the link takes us to the Isle of Wight Ferry.
and the most notable ferry to the Isle of Wight
Ryde Pier Head hovercraft geograph-3212359-by-Ben-Brooksbank
Ben Brooksbank / Hovercraft from Southsea at Ryde Pier Head, 1965
The Isle of Wight has been quite topical recently. Its been on the telly...Antiques Road Trip, and its been on the forum recently with Micks Flying Visit, and the whatsthisthen of the Camaro under the cover.

Probably not that one but the little shipyard my dad worked at built some of the early hovercraft, including some destined for the IoW.
Also some of the glass-covered touring boats for the Volga, similar to the ones previously shown, and again, hydrofoils.
Unusual for a firm only employing about twenty people and traditionally building wooden fishing boats.

Interesting additional info Steve. Was it a Whitby yard? Worth a name check.myglaren wrote: ↑13 Aug 2020, 08:36 Probably not that one but the little shipyard my dad worked at built some of the early hovercraft, including some destined for the IoW.

When I put Whitby Hovercraft into the net this image was first up. Interesting in its own right but made by Denny in Dumbarton who themselves have an interesting logo, derived from Dumbarton's coat of arms.
