Relay 2002

Post by Fra21r+ »

Hi folks
Not been on for a while due to ill health
Anyway
Citroen relay lwb 244 I think
2002
2.2 hdi
Non ABS
Van is camper

Not been used much and the battery went flat recharged and van started no problem
Rev counter seems low at idle and when you give it the beans
About 4 k reves it goes bananas all over the place
Lift off and idles OK and reverse OK till the same as above

Battery is discharging over time

Now noticed the mileomerer is adding mile on when ignition is on and not running

Disconnected the plug at the switch at the gear box
Still the same

Cleaned earth at chassis leg on passanger side
where the earth cables come out that part of the harness for the reversing switch

Still the same

Disconnected the battery and un plugged ecu
Reconnect battery
Key back on miles still getting added to the mileomerer
Disconnected the main mutiplug in under fuse box

Still the same any ideas
Spedo cluster!!

Does it still count up if the speed sensor is un plugged?

Plug at speed sensor
Left to right of plug
No 1.. battery voltage... black/blue
No2... nothing............ Purple/ yellow
No 3...7.2 v............ Gray/ green

Checked all earth's engine compartment
And Behind left right fuse boxes

All fuses ok

Speedo now reads in km rather than miles
Adds a km in 20 seconds with ignition on
And speed sensor disconnected / un pluged
Can't find anything in lexia

Suppose this is real old tec

Any thoughts would be appreciated

Not sure if it will help but have you done the BSI reset procedure.?
As you said you had a flat battery and the problems have started afterwards and that the battery is discharging has the battery been tested?
Is the rev counter showing zero when off?
Could be the cluster but if showing mileage/km in digital format then it has to be getting incorrect info or has it not been getting correct info when driven and catching up ?
Just thinking out loud

This is a really bizarre fault & not one i've ever seen before, At the moment I cant really think it could be anything apart from an instrument panel fault, Have you tried unplugging the panel for a few minutes then re connecting.
Does the van have ABS? if it does try unplugging the ABS unit, this van isn't multiplexed so in theory it should'nt have anything to do with it but id just like to rule it out.
Does it by any chance have an aftermarket cruise control system fitted? I know this can be quite common on motorhomes.
I'd also like to double check a wiring diagram to see if anything else could be affecting it. For this i need the last 8 digits of your VIN, dont post the full VIN or i wont be able to see it.

No Abs
No cruise
Battery is new
Rev counter sits where it should
Have disconnected the speedo head and reconnected /over night
Don't think has BSI as its very early and basic management system

Well it looks pretty simple, the Speed sensor Pin1- 12v power supply, Pin2- Earth, Pin 3 - speed pulse signal to instrument panel. Pin 15 of the 18 way Black connector is the input pin from the road speed sensor.
If the speed sensor on the gearbox is unplugged i cant really see anything else causing this apart from a faulty panel.
No aftermarket Sat nav installed either?? The reason I asked about this & aftermarket Cruise controls is that these systems are usually wired into the speed pulse wire.
Yes this van is not multiplexed so no BSI. The relay wasn't multiplexed till the mk3 around 2007.

Thanks for the input
Pin 1.. 12v ign on
Pin 2.. Earth
Pin 3 disconnected from the speed sensor give out 7.2 v.. With ignition on and black plug conected to speedo cluster ( surly that's not right as the speed sensor should send a pulse up pin 3 to speedo cluster)

Disconnect black plug at speedo cluster with ign on
no voltage at pin 3 to speed sensor

Cluster fualt?

The speed sensor is hall effect so the output on pin 3 will pulse between 0v & 12v only when the wheels are turning though. Looks like a cluster fault to me.

what a bizarre fault.. cant help :)

I have the same van, engine - made into a camper.

Going forwards, HDi tuning do a useful map on these!

also you can fit factory Cruise for £25 (the price of the correct stalk) - will make future sojourns down the autoroutes a bit nicer!
