A tripod is the most naturally stable platform, as (assuming the ground is reasonably stable) all three feet will be in contact with the ground.

And here's a Scottish Connnection
Scottish Nitroglycerin & One Legged Stools
1870. Alfred Nobel chose Ardeer, in Ayrshire, as the location of what was to become the largest explosives factory in the world.
"The surroundings are rather trying to sensitive nerves - your life depends, at every moment, upon a thermometer and a man on a one legged stool.

One of my recent birthday presents was a book called AA British Road Map PuzzleBook. It contains a huge range of motoring map related questions which I feel I should share, so here is number 1:

Can you name the 7 Roman Gates to London?

Nor me but probably too easily googlable so I'll approach it with guesses elimination and clues if I can Mick.

So the first crop of seven

Highgate, Newgate, Aldgate, Southgate, Stanegate, Eastgate, Westgate

Not expecting many right so I hapent bothered spoilerising it!

First clue: of the remaining 5, 4 are still in use (the names not the gates!) but I have not heard of the fifth myself, so an element of research is likely to be needed but I think you should go for the other 4 first to get more fun out of it!! :-D

Next clue one of the two remaining still in use, begins with the same three letters as one you have already named! :)

Correct so far
Aldgate, Newgate, Ludgate, Moorgate,
Next clue the remaining two still in use both begin with the same three letters! :)
Well I'm scraping the barrel of my London knowledge now I've rejected Lancaster Gate (Lancaster probably wasnt even invented in roman times.) but are we moving on now to gates that dont have *gate on the end of the place?

but just to keep the guesses going I'll try a few gates form other parts of the country which may be reflected in the remaining London Roman Gates....expecting a zero for these.
Tollgate, Cowgate, Gallowgate, Micklegate

You got your zero :-D but I amended the last clue as I had it wrong when I first wrote it. So to clarify:
3 remaining, two names still in use one of which uses the same first three letters as one you have already named, the third I had not heard of either!! :)
Extra clue, they all end in gate.! :-D

Well on my minor musings around the London Underground I did spot Aldersgate which is now just Barbican.

So does ALdersgate take us onto 5

Possibly Crossgate
