..and with it being Tea Towel Day on room 101 there is also a personal link in that amongst the tea towel collection we had when I was a boy, was a souvenir linen tea towel with Bunratty Castle on it. Not that we had ever been to Bunratty before or since but these things appeared via my gran and grandpa who both worked for Lord and Lady Gort who restored the castle.

Presumably that's the same Lord Gort that had an underground hospital in Gibraltar named after him ? Can't be too many Lord Gort's around ? :)

There were two brothers Field Marshal John Standish Surtees Prendergast Vereker, 6th Viscount Gort, VC, GCB, CBE, DSO & Two Bars, MVO, MC (10 July 1886 – 31 March 1946)

and his brother successor to the Irish peerage but not the UK peerage, Standish Robert Gage Prendergast Vereker, 7th Viscount Gort, MC, KStJ (12 February 1888 – 21 May 1975) He and Lady Gort were the ones who renovated Bunratty Castle, and returned with gifts of tea towels and cigarettes for the staff!

I guess the one who the hospital in Gibraltar was named after would be the 6th Lord Gort.

Well we have landed in Virginia name checked on the tab packets of virtually every brand of cigarettes with the adjective "finest" preceding it. I wonder where the "worst" virginia tobacco went...ah yes Players Number 10 :!:
So how about a quiz about "The Virginian" TV series (even though it was set in Medicine Bow, Wyoming :-D) Got to be TOH only

1 What was the Ranch called :?:
2. Which actor played "The Virginian" :?:
3. Which actor played Judge Henry Garth :?:
4. Which actor played Trampas :?:
If you ever saw it you will know those answers!

Thats all the right names Mick. Lee J Cobb the Judge, Shiloh the ranch, The Virginian James Drury, and Trampas Doug McClure, and as I found out the famous "Troy McClure" from the Simpsons is made up from Troy Donahue/Doug McClure.

I only ever watched the first few episodes of The Simpsons so I don't know about Troy McClure but I was an avid fan of most of the Westerns from The Lone Ranger as a boy through The Range Rider, Laramie, Wagon Train, Wells Fargo, The Virginian, Gunsmoke, Bonanza, The High Chaparral and even Maverick!! Loved 'em :-D

A lovely place for an evening stroll, a pity it isn't close enough for me since I moved from West to East Herts, but I do call in when I can. :)
