For coal to become an ember, you have to light it first ! Then let it die down quite a bitmickthemaverick wrote: 21 Jul 2020, 21:36 Philosophical question.... when does a coal become an ember and when does an ember become a clinker?![]()

Re: Picture(s) of the day....
Anyone got a photograph of a railway bridge, with the Engineers Line Reference and the Bridge Number clearly shown for anywhere other than the East Coast Mainline
In the meantime, there is more than one side to a clinker. Thought you may like to see the other side against the background of an original Nissan Micra Exhaust.
Now that channel in it has me thinking that could well have come from a Steam Loco's firebox

REgards NeilIf the firebox is at a temperature lower than its normal working temperature to sustain steam, clinker will form on the firebars. Clinker is a hard deposit that occurred when ash and sulphur fused together and removal usually meant chipping off with a long poker.

I have come to the conclusion that Network Rail do not maintain that Bridge....why? Because I suspect it is on a railway which has been closed for many yearsbobins wrote: 22 Jul 2020, 21:12 Right county (but only just by the skin of your teeth), but wrong bridge by a country mile![]()

Re: Picture(s) of the day....
You never said it had to be a maintained bridge
Yep - it's somewhere between Midhurst and Pulborough. Somewhere
There's only a handful of bridges along that stretch, so shouldn't take you too long on Google Streetview

Google streetview is absolutely useless at showing dismantled railway lines. So without an OS map of that particular area of West Sussex to hand I had to go for the extremely difficult to operate OS Custom Maps where you get a matchbox size of a map to move along the old dismantled railway inch by inch.
Then you go back to street view and try to get to the same place as the OS map...and then you come across the country lanes of Sussex, sweeping views and wide horizons you don't get. Anyway I got there eventually. I am heading for the fridge and a beer!

Marvellous, you deserved that beer
May I suggest, in future, you use something like https://www.bing.com/maps/ to get close to the desired area then use the drop-down to select Ordnance Survey maps - you get a much wider coverage.

JUst seen a hedgehog, still in a photographable position but I'm sure it doesnt want a flash going off in its face so I'll not press the shutter on it and leave it to go about its business.
