Not my pictures or text - they're from a mate of mine (hope he doesn't mind !), but a mildly interesting story.....
Bridge - TP
Bridge - TP
Stones - TP
Stones - TP
"The bridge, unfinished in these 1980s photos, was built in 1936.

Part of the autobahn network, its completion was 'held up' by WW2.

It would have been the motorway from Schleiz to Hof.

In the two pics you will see stacks of cut stone on the ground.

Each block was numbered as if part of a massive jigsaw puzzle. Which, actually, was exactly what they were.

The Iron Curtain severed the motorway and the unfinished bridge sat there - the [unfinished] road to nowhere.

That is, until 1996, when the blocks finally were put in position, an extra two lanes added, and the road finally led on to Hof."

Well what do you get for €32 Million these days, the worlds longest pedestrian bridge (of its type) and a walk in and above the forest. Surprise surprise its not in China, its in Germany, and yes its going to be built near Hof...
...and the snappy title of the video of the project...
"Go through hell and still be so close to heaven."

..A challenge that the bridges in the Frankenwald Nature Park like to face successfully"

Thanks to the Bridgehunter's Chronicles for the link!

Now the Bridgehunter's Chronicles are as fascinating as they are detailed. There is even the odd quiz thrown in for entertainment. Possibly in the category of "limited appeal" but there are some nice bridge pictures even if you are totally uninterested in the quiz or the answers.

Bridgehunter's Chronicles Borders to Bridges: A Guessing Quiz on the bridges of the former East/West German border

You could always try just one of the Questions.....Whereisthisbridge?

Judging by the distinctive coloured U-bahn train* on the bridge, I'd say it's highly likely to be somewhere in Berlin :)
*- not a unique colour to Berlin though.

Well I'm sure Berlin is a very interesting place, but the chain is ready to move on.

Time to make the next link.

Well I think it would be reasonable to suggest that we fly from Berlin to Chester and look at the window in the cathedral:

Checkpoint Bravo - or Grenzübergangsstelle Drewitz-Dreilinden as the German's catchily named it - rarely gets a mention.... though it's certainly anything than glamorous.

Well, I managed to get from Berlin to Orange County, California when something managed to "Take my Breathe Away". Mind you, the journey was a bit worrying, as (part of the way there) I went through the "Danger Zone".

To link both Mick and James' posts together, I think we should head to Salisbury where, in the city we've got the impressive cathedral, and out on Salisbury Plain we've got an array of different Byways to the Danger Zones. OK, granted, singing "Byway to the Danger Zone" isn't quite so dramatic, but it's close enough :-D
