Toyota Prius cats...

Post by ekjdm14 »

Woke up this morning to 5 missed calls from the inlaws, they got in their Motability Prius to go shopping and it sounded like a tractor... Long story short, thieving scum have cut the catalyst off the car overnight!

This is in a quiet village in Cheshire so not exactly South London or the Bronx lol, anyone else experienced this pond lifery going on lately? We knew Priuses (Prii?) were a target vehicle but wasn't exactly expecting it to happen.

Hard to say whether they intend to flog them on the aftermarket, as I can't see them going to the trouble of melting them down to get the precious metals in them - that would be too much hassle, surely...

But seems Toyota are aware of it:

They're just weighed in as scrap. Probably worth about £25 for that but many £100s to replace. Scumbags.

Hi
A Toyota Prius cat is worth about £500!
That's probably why it was stolen
A friend of mine is licenced vehicle dismantler and he recently had an older prius in for breaking.
A rep visits every so often and takes the numbers stamped on the catalytic converter and prices them accordingly

Try £765 for a catalytic converter for a C5 X7!

That's dealer prices of course, but must be some other reason as the Prius ones can also be had a for a few hundred quid. - Like everything depends on the brand.

This is actually a bit of an epidemic at the moment, particularly in London. I know a nurse a couple of months ago here that returned to her Prius after a 12 hour shift to find the cat gone. Apparently they wont drive (even in electric mode) if the cat is missing so recovery needed too, They are over £2000 to replace from Toyota so not sure if they are reselling or just sending for scrap. I don't imagine they are unscrewing the oxygen sensors & leaving them there either, add 2 oxygen sensors to the price as well.
There are loads of people on ebay selling security devices for Prius cats. Check the videos on YouTube, they are nicking them F1 style & often in broad daylight.

Oh if you think that's bad for a C5 cat, Check the price of one for a Xsara VTS

She claimed Her insurance for this yes, but it really depends on the value of the car whether they write it off or not. The repair is over £2000 for genuine parts.

There will still be expense for the poor driver concerned. There will undoubtedly be an excess to pay and premiums will probably rise the next time insurance renewal comes along. In addition, if the NCD is not protected, then there will be a loss of some of that as well.

Truly disgraceful behaviour. They neither know nor care about the consequences to their victims. Hopefully karma will sort them out, which sadly doesn't help those affected.
