Hit your Windows key and type:

winver

then press return key.

This will state the actual W10 version (Home or Pro etc.) and who it is licensed to.

You may have a 'Home' version or trial version. I am aware that on some W7 installations with a registered key, W10 may activate using that key. What was tyhe previous W7 version you had installed? Home, Pro, Ultimate?

Oh, well that's good. Just make sure the activation is not linked to any Microsoft account in your name though.

New wireless keyboard and mouse installed to overcome the intermittant space bar on the new laptop and now I have the bonus of the scroll wheel on the mouse which is so much better than the touch pad for working on forums and list type software. Well chuffed with entire upgrade for less than £250 :-D :-D

I know that this is not really the place for general pc issues but a general question - has anyone else had the black screen issue when trying to use Sky Go with windows 10?

We binned everything Sky related years ago and good riddance!

But back to the issue though Mick, it's my understanding Firefox is no longer supported. But looking at the support pages it seems their usual answer to all their problems is worthy of Microsoft - restart everything!

Thanks for that Marc. You wouldn't believe the lengths I've been to on this one. Virtually non stop since 10am yesterday until 6pm today when I decided to take a break till tmrw!! There is definitely a clash between the new sky go app release amd windows10 2004 as released in May. As usual neither is admitting an issue so I am working through all the ideas I can find on the forums and come up with myself. From 'drag the side of the window until it opens' to 'rewriting entries in the registry' I am trying all ideas. It is on a pc with no other purpose whatsoever so I am free to try anything because I cannot be worse off than it is. The real beauty of course is that it doesn't really matter except I hate to give up on anything!!

I do not envy you one bit Mick.

Netflix and Freesat now - rarely watch any terrestrial channels now - all repeats and utter drivel . I think Nick sums it up very nicely:

I still pay the licence fee. Haven't watched the TV in four years now. I do use iPlayer on odd occasions. Only things this year have been Killing Eve, His Dark Materials and QI. It would make more sense to but the DVDs.

Which I do, then archive them without having watched them.

On a grumpy note, I put a DVD in my Amazon basket - Hanna, with Saoirse Ronan in it, saw it a few years back and liked it.
Then decided to get a CD that was languishing there, "Officium" with Jan Garbarek. Clicked on the buyit button and hey presto! I have just bought a hundred quids worth of stuff I was 'saving for later', without applying the free delivery option :(
Hanna and the coffee maker just landed on my doorstep.

What I really wanted was more RAM for my laptop and a hard drive caddy. Bugger.

There's some ram sticks on my shelf here but they're not very big capacity. 2x 512 MB for laptops and 2x 2Gb for desktops if anyone can make use of them.

What is the make and specific model of the laptop? I may (through work, if nothing else) be able to find out what type of memory cards it will support.

Thanks for the offer James.
Creative couldn't find anything (make/model supplied, drew a blank)
Their download/scan tool doesn't work with Linux. Got the details anyway.
I'm putting an order in to Amazon when I recover from the trauma of spending a hundred quid accidentally.

It used to be OK but is struggling now. Memory and swap files maxed out quite frequently. I have another that is fine but like this one better.

Hi Steve, I have just done an ebay search, and here are the results. The largest cost seems to be that of shipping;

https://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_from ... S&_sacat=0

If your system is 32bit it can only manage up to 4GB (and that includes the Video RAM). Anything more than that will not be seen, and may even cause the laptop to not boot up (as it cannot address the memory properly).

That's a disappointment James as it already has 4 gig.
It runs Linux Mint 64 bit fine too.
It's a Dell Latitude E5530.
Handle 0x004B, DMI type 17, 34 bytes
Memory Device
Array Handle: 0x0048
Error Information Handle: Not Provided
Total Width: 64 bits
Data Width: 64 bits
Size: 2048 MB
Form Factor: SODIMM
Set: None
Locator: Bottom Slot
Bank Locator: Not Specified
Type: DDR3
Type Detail: Synchronous
Speed: 1600 MT/s
Manufacturer: Hynix/Hyundai
Serial Number: 0058A469
Asset Tag: 9876543210
Part Number: HMT325S6CFR8A-PB
Rank: 1
Configured Clock Speed: 1600 MT/s
I was dithering about trying to decide on 8 gig (£37) or 16 gig (£75)
Being terminally stingy I don't want to spend more than essential but don't want to buy 8 gig and find it isn't enough.
