Air flow component missing - consequences?

Post by Andle »

There is a part of the air pipe that has been missing from my engine bay for a long time:
5630B2BE-C34E-4713-94AD-55028E49C77C.png
Look at the square pipe (no. 9 in the diagram).

It is actually two constituent pieces. The longer piece + the second smaller piece that tucks underneath and connects directly into the air filter housing.

Let’s call the bit that tucks underneath the: ‘Mini Trunk’.

It has been missing for about 2 .5 years (I gave it in for a service, haven’t seen it since then).

How critical is this component - & what might it’s absence lead too?

Surely it’s meant to be there - but is it a critical component? If so - Why?

The piping ensures that the air intake is taken from an area away from the engine and where there is a fresh supply of outside air. The piping also reduces any contaminants or fumes / smoke that can get in from the engine area. This isn't the first time I've seen this where people forget to put everything back properly.

1434C1 is the part and they are only sold as a complete unit. Citroen charge £65.23 for these new, so I suggest you look at a scrappy to get one

Question: Without that part, would water spray enter the air filter unit & cause serious damage over time?

Could this be a cause of some of the problems I’ve been having?

I had a Picasso VTX 1.6Hdi and it fell off mine as well. Never replaced it and no problems afterwards. There are two retaining clips moulded into the plastic and they usually get broken by ham fisted removal attempts to change the fuel and/or air filter. Look on the positive side; at least you will be able to drive through deeper floods as the air intake point is much higher. You would have to drive through some seriously deep puddles to get any water spray in there and any water spray going in there will only lead to a soggy air filter which I never experienced on mine.

Don't forget that fresher, cooler air is denser and carries more oxygen, which is why it is placed away from the engine to take in fresh outside air. Where you have the gaping hole just by the engine, there will be a lot of heat generated from the engine, so the hotter air will be less dense entering with less oxygen. Your MAF (Mass Air Flow) meter is further along as the air exits the air filter, so at least that will be measuring the temperature and density of the air - but as a result of hotter air, the engine ECU may affect the fuelling to compensate for this.

GiveMeABreak,

I’m going to visit several scrappys (those that are open) but I imagine the same part, is used on a number of different models.

Can anyone help me with a list of cars that use this part - so that I increase the chances of coming across one?

Just search on that part number (and put " marks either side of the part number when you Google it like this:

"1431C1"

That will bring up searches that have quoted this part number. Putting up other models is not really sensible, as it will depend on the engine type fitted, so this could be misleading.

This part was fitted to some C2, C3, C3 II, C3 (A51), Berlingo, C4 Picasso vehicles - but I would advise caution and this part will be engine-specific. Stick with Googling the part number as I've shown and this will focus on the part not the vehicle which is what you need.

Marc,

Somethings not working out.

I googled the term as suggested - adding terms like air / tube / Citroen.

Got literally nothing. Where am I going wrong?

Marc,

I am dumping the following term in the google search box:

“1431C1”

Literally nothing to do with cars - is coming up.

That's my fault - I quoted the wrong part number

My apologies for the confusion.

It should be "1434C1" not 1431C1.

You should end up with this search result on Google:
