Try putting pressure on the door (keeping pressure on as if you were closing it) from the outside as you lock and unlock the central locking a few times, then try to open the door again. Failing that the door control may have given out.

I note you have Central Deadlocking on your Xantia.

You can see if it is mechanical or electrical - try unlocking the passenger door with the key and opening it. If you can then it may be electrical.
Or it could be that the rod has become loose or unattached from the handles. Is there any resistance on the handles (inner and outer) when trying to open?

There is no resistance when I try either inner or outer door handle. The key just spins in the lock, it doesn't seem to engage with the key. I have just tried gently pushing the door …...but it wont open. I am guessing the door card needs to come off to access the mechanism? which looks very difficult with the door closed!

It seems likely that your primary faut is that the lock is in the deadlocked state, perhaps due to a broken wire, but the exterior key lock should still be able to unlock the door.

When the key locks have not been used for a long time, sometimes the anti-forcing mechanism gets sticky and they spin with no other issue present. Squirting some thin lubricant into the keyhole has been known to fix this.

The rod had become loose, re clipped and it opens from the inside! I have just fitted a new lock, it now locks fine but I can not open the door from the outside only the inside ! any ideas as to what I might have done ? cheers Terry.

There should be a rod to the inside door handle (which you have re-attached) and another rod to the outside door handle. Did you check that this was also connected?
