Citroen C5 dials

Post by FlyMike_88 »

Hello all,

I am trying to clean the plastic screen in front of the dials but having trouble. PSB.

Image

The grime is behind the screen so I will need to remove it to clean properly. Is there any way to get to that plastic that would involve taking the dashboard apart? :rofl2:

Many thanks,

Mike

Hi
Are you sure the grime is behind the plastic?
I have recently fitted different clocks in my C5 and cleaned the plastic with headlight refurbish cream from halfords.
It's not an easy job to remove the clocks as the covers (top and bottom of the column ) have to be removed as well as comms unit.
Care must also be taken when replacing the clocks as the aluminium block that carries the comms unit marks the plastic if you aren't careful.
I've never stripped them down if the grime is on the inside.
If it goes wrong you could always fit a different set of clocks (taking care as I was advised on the forum to check the mileage as it will register the higher mileage)

Thanks again for all the help I was given

Regards
Steve

Hi,

I replaced my clocks the other week due to faulty gauges. It can be done without removing top and bottom covers + comms unit. The plastic cover that is dirty easily pops off once you have the clocks unit out. I removed by, removing x2 TORX screws at top under side, x1 screw hidden behind each front buttons on either side of dash, x2 screws on steering column covers. Drop steering column to its lowest position, remove top steering column cover, pull dash plastic trim covering clocks forwards, then pop out each heater vent each side of trim, this allows to pull the trim forward a bit more, you can then rotate the plastic trim to reveal the hidden screws holding the clocks to the front trim x4 (x2 top and x2 bottom to the front plastic trim) then rotate the plastic trim towards you and remove leaving the clocks unit behind. Then unplug clocks from wiring connector (x1 plug) and dismantle to as you see fit to clean (clock unit all strips apart very easily). In fact each gauge is actually a separate unit, all mounted into a frame with the circuit board, and then the clear plastic cover.

Hey all,

Just an update to this one. I used a headlight cleaner on the plastic screens in front of the dials and it has cleaned them up perfectly. They must have had quite a lot of surface scratching. Looking perfect now!

Thanks all.

What type of headlamp cleaner? Do you have a name and/or a link?

I have used toothpaste to clean the plastic headlight lenses, and it does a surprisingly good job!

I've just had an advisory on my yellow headlights, what brand James and lots of elbow or tools?

Any decent toothpaste, as they all contain fine abrasives. You will also need a couple of flannels, and plenty of elbow grease. Get the lenses clean, and then start polishing. You can look up on YouTube how to do it.

Mike (Michel) did have a proper headlight cleaning kit (he had already done his Berlingo), so he offered to complete the job on my headlights (and I accepted). The toothpaste had removed the yellowing, but the kit smoothed and then sealed the lenses.

I spent many an hour with Autosol, toothpaste and jeweller's rouge on my headlights, then gave up and bought new ones on eBay.
There was what appeared to be algae growing inside in addition to the yellowing and 'misting'.
