2014 C4GP gear slipping

Hi all,

I have 2014 C4GP with auto transmission. I've started to notice that on higher gears when accelerating revs climb too fast and speed climbs like it is on rubber band. Revs increase and after few seconds speed starts to climb. Did not noticed this before. Car has 150K kilometers. I've heard that low transmission oil level can cause gers to slip. How can I check transmission oil level? I believe it must be done from under car? Can someone share some information please.

There are several different types of transmission that could be fitted to your car, to give useful advice, we need to know which one you have. If you do not know, post the VIN and someone should be able to look it up.

You don't have a proper automatic transmission, you have the STT 6 speed piloted system. It's basically a manual gearbox and clutch that has electro-hydraulic actuators to change the gears for you.

So basically, you will have the same problems as anybody with a manual transmission, with any additional issues related to the actuating system. Your problem may be a worn clutch and / or a worn Dual Mass Flywheel. So basically if you are getting the increase in engine speed on acceleration (especially in 5th or 6th gear) with a delay in acceleration, then it's probably time for a new clutch / DMF.

If replacing the clutch always get the DMF done at the same time as it won't last the life of another clutch and the labour is the killer on these as they take a lot of time to replace. If you leave the DMF and it starts to break up you can damage related components, so do consider this.

The piloted system ECU needs top be programmed again after the job to ensure smooth gear changes - so that needs to be done by somebody that knows the system.

Oil level probably will not work this time. Well I believe at 150K km it is time for this job anyway.

The general test is stick it in manual mode, try driving to about 50-60 MPH (80 -96 KMH) change to into 5th or 6th gear and floor the accelerator. If you here the engine speed up without the corresponding increase in vehicle speed, but then the speed slowly catches up - then it's likely to be the clutch slipping.

With this sort of thing you can only be sure by actually removing the clutch and examining it - but 150k on a clutch is pushing it for one of these anyway! Again always budget for a DMF too as I said, as the time to do the job is significant and a DMF won't last the life of a new clutch - if that breaks up you are looking at collateral damage to other parts.

I had a Peugeot 307. My friend after test drive told me that clutch can die any day now in my car. Same was said in the garage. When they removed old clutch it was big surprise. Yes it was worn but still could be used for long time. It was not on its way out how I was told.
Anyways, I will start checking price in local garages and also ask dealer. Will see how big the difference will be if any...
