The Chain...make the next link

Post by NewcastleFalcon »

Never break the Chain

Here is a starting point. Take from it what you will and make the next link. Could take us somewhere interesting but does require joining in with.

What better than the back of a Rice Krispies packet, full packet here

The race for space.
Came across this envelope in my late father-in-law's stamp collection. It was flown on Challenger on the 8th Space shuttle mission.

Saw the thread title and thought of this immediately:

As I get older I think a lot about the hereafter - I go into a room and then wonder what I'm here after.

Inside every old person is a young person wondering what the hell happened.

Semi deliberate Paul :-D

But seeing as we havent quite moved off space I did come across this picture and this article which may be of interest

The bloke on the far right of the picture is well known and indeed here he is with his chums from the British Interplanetary Society in 1938

article HMS Moon Rocket

Make the link out anything you glean out of that :-D

Sticking to the rocket theme....

Peenemünde, Wernher von Braun, the V-2 (A4) rocket.

"The rockets go up
but where do they come down ?
'That's not my department'
said Wernher von Braun"

In the B&W photo in the bottom left below, you can see a hydrant to the right of the left hand. That's the same hydrant in the main part of the photo.

A different view of the rocket theme makes an interesting read here

Did you pick up from the Austin Major Elite the other day the ""rocket" colour flash on the tailfins" as it was habitually referred to in the literature.

The Rocket - an early train...... makes a change from all the cancellations and late arrivals :-D

Box Tunnel on the Great Western Main Line. 1.83 miles long on a 1:100 gradient. Originally built to take broad gauge trains, designed and built by IKB.... but he did have help from up to 4000 workmen. Rumoured to be built on an alignment that allows the sun at sunrise to shine all the way through on Brunel's birthday (9th April) but this is contentious at best - although it would, theoretically, be possible for this to happen around this date. The track bed was recently lowered 2 foot to allow catenary for electrification works.

A couple of logical links from Rocket will get you to this beauty:

So can you make those links and explain where "the house that has no knocker" comes in?

...and a link from Brunel's Box Tunnel to Stapleford Minature Railway which has at least 2 claims to fame....

It has a replica of the Box Tunnel, and has this interesting notice for The Avengers fans....yes the TV Series!

Stephenson's Rocket was built by.... ummmmm.... Stephenson :-D He became ill with a disease he shared with Brunel (I think Brunel had it Monday - Friday, and Stephenson had it at weekends  ) Stephenson used to get pestered at home by cranks and inventors, so he had a yacht - The Titania - built so he could get away from those meddlesome people. He referred to his yacht as "the house that has no knocker" as no one could reach him whilst on board.
