C4 Growl/Grinding Noise Help Needed

Post by jimmylad007 »

Hi all. I have a Citroen C4 1.6 2008. I've started hearing a noise when accelerating in low gears (sounds like a tractor!) and when changing down to low gears. I've made a recording, see here:

This is me changing down from 3rd to 2nd, and the noise starts when the clutch starts to bite. With the clutch down, there is no noise even when moving.

Thanks all.

Sounds like a gearbox bearing. If you have the car running at standstill in neutral, you probably won't hear it when you press and release the clutch.

Gearbox was what I feared. Definitely zero noise in standstill, and the clutch/release bearing are only a few months old.

How long before it packs in do you reckon?

Any vibration at the gear lever?
How is the gearbox oil level?

No vibration of the gear lever.

Gearbox oil level is fine. And it's relatively new as it was changed with the clutch.
