BX GTI Aux Belt Tensioner Wanted

Post by GordonW »

The Aux Belt Tensioner part number 6453EO on my BX GTI16v has failed and i'm trying to find where I can purchase a replacement. The original one on the car was a tensioner SKF 363393B with plastic idler/tensioner wheel, which I replaced in 2015 with the SKF VKM33001 bearing with metal idler wheel. It's only done 50k kms but is stuffed. Google search hits all come up Out of Stock, hence my post. Thanks.
With both tensioners I notice that the belt doesn't run true on the idler but to one side. There is no ability to adjust this alignment on the idler holding bolt, as there is no washer or shim that I could remove and I wonder whether this is normal and the alignment not a problem.

Hi Gordon,

Choice of metal or plastic on Mister Auto (owned by PSA):
https://www.mister-auto.co.uk/drive-bel ... 1988-1993/

Hopefully someone here will be able to help on the alignment problem.
How true is the belt running on the other components (AC com and alternator)?
Could the alternator need shifting over? Just guessing.

Chris, thanks for your reply. I've tried to register on the Mister Auto website but it won't allow New Zealand, and i'm guessing they don't post parts here as well. they do list SKF33001 belt tensioner but it is "out of stock". They have other belt tensioners by NTN, Dayco, Febi etc and whilst having the same OD on the pulley it shows a different attachment/adjustment mechanism. For some of these I get "not compatible" with my GTI 16V. With the same attachment as these other tensioners is a SKF 33002, so I'm guessing as its different to the 33001 that these available tensioners are not suitable for the GTI16V. Any advice you can give on this would be appreciated.

OlgPug, thanks for the peugeotparts website. Whilst it shows the 6453EO part in the listing the quantity available is shown as 0. Unless I've looked at it incorrectly it looks like aftermarkets mfrs/suppliers have stopped producing this belt tensioner and stocks have run out.

If you email Dean I`m sure he will have a good used one, he sends parts all over the world.

Chris, Thanks for your advice on how to get Mister Auto parts to NZ. I drilled out the rivets on the SKF33001 bearing pulley and the problem is that the bearing outer race has been spinning in the enclosing pulley. The bearing itself is smooth, but unfortunately the outer race has worn the pulley housing, and presumably got the bearing hot in the process although it appears smooth turning it by hand. The riveting process of manufacture joining the two parts of the pulley has obviously not been tight enough on the shoulders of the outer race to hold it in place in service.
A work in progress to try and get a replacement.

OldPug, I'll wait to see what Dean says about a replacement if available. Thanks.

NZ post has a forwarding service from the UK which lets you have items shipped to their UK center (near Heathrow) and have them forwarded to NZ. Not cheap, and currently a bit slow, but it does work.
