I've got another finding out question related to our picnic spot right at the top of the Flodden memorial at the top of the hill.
Pennine Cycleway Quiz Question Day 8 Number 5
What links St Leonard's Parish Church, Middleton Nr Rochdale with Flodden?

Ive got a bottle of Fentimans Ginger Beer (large) and Pork Pie for my Picnic but will have to adjourn for the afternoon and virtually rejoin my postings later on when washing machine drain hoses and pump have been satisfacorily unblocked!

Can you keep me synced in with your progress Mick and Bob I'll add some photos later. You know the type of thing I would choose for lunch so assume I am "virtually" with you :-D

Cheers Neil

The answer to this question is nicely summed up in:
Spoiler: show
The church of St Leonard was completed in 1524 by Sir Richard Assheton, in celebration of the knighthood granted to him by Henry VIII for his part in the Battle of Flodden in 1513. The Flodden Window, in the sanctuary, is thought to be the oldest war memorial in the UK.[2] It commemorates on it the names of the Middleton archers who fought at Flodden. The church also has one of the finest collections of monumental brasses in the area, including the only brass in the UK of an English Civil War officer in full armour, Major-General Sir Ralph Assheton. In 1958 George Pace added a new north porch and vestries. He also installed light fittings, and designed a memorial to the First World War.[3]

Once we've cleared our plates here we'll be heading up to Chainbridge Honey Farm where we hope to find a few souvenirs for the folks back home. On the way we will pass through Horncliffe:

Neil and I were talking to the beekeeper here and I asked him about fishing the river. He said I should talk to Brian Palmer if I wanted to know about the fishing. The trouble is he didn't say anymore so:

Looks like the labrador has followed the bike from Flodden :-D Needed a Lie Down.

Just up on the elizabethan walls Mick this viewpoint is about 100 yards from our pub on the Bridge for the pre Train meal. I'll freewheel down to Lowry's at the Chandelry and join you in lets say 1 minute!
