rear disc change

Post by stevee1953 »

Hi all,i am seeking some advice on deactivating the ebs on a picasso 2009 mk1,i am going to change rear discs and pads hopefully this week
I have got diagbox,my question is,in diagbox i see two options to put brake into release mode either removal of cables,or removal of the
actual ebs motor,I have a workshop manual, but it just tells me to use diagnostics to do this,so does it matter which one i use to release
the brake.I did hear of a pic owner using the wind handle to release the brake,is this also possible??I dont want to get into trouble by
doing something i am not sure of,,any advice will be appreciated..thanks steve

If replacing the rear pads only, then you don't need to use the diagnostic tool. Just ensure that the car is immobilised, the handbrake is fully released and the battery is disconnected, to prevent the vehicle from accidental or otherwise re-application of the handbrake during fitting of the pads.

If replacing the disc hubs, then you need to place the electric parking brake in the removal position using the diagnostic tool which provides the clearance necessary to unclip the cables. Following replacement, you then have to run 2 procedures:
  • Carry out the handbrake cables packing procedure.
  • Carry out the electric parking brake calibration procedure (this re-defines the handbrake application starting point).
After the above check the application of the parking brake.

The procedures should be guided.

Although I have an electronic parking brake on my X7 it is a different system to yours, so I can't verify the Diagbox operation part of this, but my last post is specific to your MK I C4 Picasso operation for Pads / Discs.

Yes they changed the system on the later Picasso, but yours still has the motor unit under the passenger seat as you've said. Hope all goes well, but follow the battery disconnect and reconnect procedure when disconnecting the battery:

Hi Steve

The reason is to prevent short circuits. As the negative is grounded through the vehicle chassis, if you are in the process of removing the positive and a wrench or other metal object comes into contact with this terminal and part of the body, it can cause short circuits / worst case cause a fire if flammable materials are about.

Hi marc if your about, just an update on disc change, they came on thursday, and put them on friday,no problems until the end when after waking the car and connecting to diagbox.
it threw up a few faults abs handbrake fault,,so recalibrated ebs again and moved car off the chocs, and hey presto,it all came back to life, scary moment for few minutes, but every thing is working as it should. So a big thanks for your advice, cheers steve

No worries, Steve. That routine just re-tensions the brake cables back to normal after you had them in the removal mode.

Glad it's all perfick. :-D
