Pennine Cycleway Quiz Question Day 5 Number 2- Who made some alterations to the church in the second half of the 19th Century and what was done?

Image
Spoiler: show
This account https://www.visitcumbria.com/evnp/orton ... ts-church/ says the church was restored and enlarged by "Paley and Austin" https://www.visitcumbria.com/paley-and-austin/ The rather odd looking appearance of the tower maybe results from, in 2007, the tower being treated with a coat of lime to help pevent damage from damp.

Time to dig something novel up about Appleby to join the quiz setting. Course its famous for its Horse Fair so I'll have to steer clear of that. I did like the discovery from Orton as I wandered around that church that Beatrice Whistler did this in the Church, there is a tangental story to be told there, not covered in the Visit Cumbria coiuple of sentences. Maybe one for a revisit when the ride is done!

REgards Neil
I have to agree that looks good, so I am going to forego my dessert in Temptations and have it in Dufton, then we can still stop in Melmerby at the Village Bakery & Cafe as suggested earlier for afternoon tea and a battery charge before the climb. Now to ponder Q3.

Initial thoughts on Question 3:
Spoiler: show
Well my research has informed me of the existence of two Augustine Washington's Senior and Junior. Senior was the father of the first USA President George Washington and Junior was the President's half brother. on reading through their respective biographies I found no direct link to Appleby other than the fact that both were born in Westmoreland as was Appleby. I shall turn my attention to Appleby and see if I can find a more direct link from this end!!

Theres the odd interesting thing about Dufton so I may ponder another question there. Yes Melmerby is an excellent stop later on to gather a bit of fortitude for Hartside which will be the highest point on Route 68.

and another to keep you going Mick

So far I have not found a more convincing answer to Q3 but I have come across another fact which is worthy of Q4:
Pennine Cycleway Quiz Question Day 5 Number 5
Whereabouts in Appleby will you find the oldest working construction of its type in England, and when did it come into service?

Thats pretty much there I just pulled ot the "facts" from this source.
Spoiler: show
That is the link all apart from "George Washington's father and two half-brothers, born in Virginia, were still educated at Appleby Grammar School. He would have followed, but in 1743, when he reached the age at which the two older boys had made the voyage, his father died suddenly. George Washington never crossed the Atlantic or gained the classical education offered by schools like Appleby (wiki)

Mick if you arrive at Melmerby before me can I send you off on a minor quest around the village. :?:

Can you find and photograph for me the round yellow old AA Village Sign for Melmerby. By photograph I will be satisfied with the one which already exists on our forum posted by yours truly!

Not really a Quiz Question......just a small mission, if you are willing to accept it (as in the old mission impossible days)
