Citroen C4 multiple electrical issues

Post by bigtone0777 »

Hi all, I'm having several intermittent faults with my 2007 C4 Picasso 1.6 HDi.

1) Handbrake faulty
2) ESP/ASR fault (which I presume is linked to the handbrake issue)

Both of these correct themselves if I turn off the ignition and start the car again but return, sometimes very quickly sometimes I can drive for quite a while before they return.

3) RF unit for the remote locking seems to be dead

4) Cruise control wont set (permanent fault)

5) Radiator fan doesn't engage before engine too hot warning although can turn it on in Lexia

6) P0409

7) P0489

8) P1162

All the codes seem to point to low voltage to the EGR.

I have stripped back the harness which runs from the fuse box, along the side of the engine to where it disappears around the back hoping that it would be a corroded wire like a Youtube video I've seen but it all looks good unless it's further round where I can't get to without almost taking the engine out lol
There is a "power distribution board" on top of the battery that looks a bit corroded and a sign of an old repair to one wire so I'm going to check the repair and clean up all of the contacts to that board and the fuses.

Could these faults all be linked to a singe power issue?

Thanks for taking the time to read through this ramble!

How old is the battery? Modern Citroens are very sensitive electronically, and a weak/failing battery can throw up all sorts of weird errors.

To be honest I don't know, I've only owned the car for 3 months but the battery does seem very strong

As Hell Razor above says, Citroens and in particular the C4 is very sensitive to battery condition, so it's a good guess. Also have a search on the http://c4owners.org forum and also the Facebook group Citroen C4UK

Thanks for the links. Hopefully the corrosion on the connections of those main fuses will have been the cause of the issue but if it continues I'll have the battery checked or replaced.

I was hoping the corrosion was causing enough resistance to cause enough voltage drop to upset the ECU's, that's the theory anyway. Either way I'll report back and hopefully it will help someone else out.

I would also consider doing a BSi reset. What this will do is to shut down all of the ECUs (NOT put them into standby, as will happen when you turn off the ignition and lock the car), and will help eliminate any glitches (REAL problems won't be cleared).

I can't believe I didn't think of trying that, should have been the first thing I done! Thanks!

I’ve recently had the same problem with my Picasso.

I’ll be driving along and my service light will come on and everything will start to fail. Most importantly the gears stop working (automatic). The gears switch to Manuel but won’t go any higher than 3rd gear. Faulty handbrake notification comes on ESP fails. Speed limiter won’t work. When I turn the engine off and give it 10 mins it works again for another 10 mins or so then faults.

Air conditioning in the back is on 24/7 even when the ignition is off.

I recently disconnected the battery the reconnected and have not had the problem since. Possible battery issue ?

Hi

I had the same issue, I bought 2nd hand C4 picasso 2009 few days ago. The autoshop unplugged the battery before sold to me.

I drove in the highway, the first 20 minutes and unitl 100km/h with D4 is ok, suddely service light on and shift to D3 and cannot change to Manual. Even stop, it still keel D3. Are u the same?

I have exactly the same problem, I changed the battery without results. I unplugged all the connectors from upper the battery and cleaned them with connections cleaner spray and problem persist. Do you still have the problem or resolved it?
