Captain Tom Moore

Post by Hell Razor5543 »

Captain Tom Moore is an elderly gentleman (99 years old) who decided to raise £1,000 by walking 100 laps of his garden before he got to 100 years old (his birthday is on 30th April). Last week he was interviewed by BBC Breakfast. This seems to have helped his fundraising a bit;

A truly remarkable achievement from a truly remarkable man... He's local to me, Marston Mortaine is only about ten miles away and he is getting a lot of coverage on our BBC local radio... Makes a nice change to have some great news amongst all the Covid doom and gloom...

And it seems that he has far exceeded his goal of £100,000. Now stands at £18,000,000 and looks to be in line for a knighthood. Well deserved indeed.

Big promotion from BBC and ITV morning shows....which is great.

I wonder if Capt Moore has been told about Piers Morgan's made up stories of British troops pissing on dead bodies ?

When you remember his original goal was £1000.00, he has done a phenomenal job and deserves any honours the country decide to bestow upon him, but we mustn't forget that the funds have come from 59+ countries and all the contrubuters warrant a huge thankyou too!! :clap: :clap: :clap:

True enough but the impetus came from him and he does deserve some recognition for that, especially as it will encourage others to do similar deeds.

As much as it pains me to say it, the mass media also had quite a hand in Cap'n Tom's glorious success. If they hadn't picked it up as a good news story, then an awful lot of people (me included) would be none the wiser.

I don't think Captain Tom Moore expected THIS;

I love the ideas one young girl came up with. First (and using the local Post Office as a mailing address) she want to get as many Birthday Cards as possible sent to him for his birthday. Second she want as many people as possible to sing "Happy Birthday Captain Tom" to him after the @Clapping for the Carers' on 30th April (Captain Moores' 100th Birthday).

Maybe its me, and I applaud the young lady for the idea about the birthday cards, but I honestly think Captain Moore would prefer the people who would have bought and posted a card, to donate that money to the fund and just settle for singing Happy Birthday to him. Apart from the logistical nightmare that the cards might cause if the response is only 5% of the people who have already donated, there is also the question of the environmental effect of that number of cards, and it is doubtful he would ever get the time to read them!! icards would solve the environmental effect but produce no revenue so I suspect the Captain would rather the extra donations!! :) :)

I think it is safe to say that Colonel Tom Moore is having an extraordinary one hundredth birthday. Two flypasts (one in the morning of a Hurricane and a Spitfire, the other in the afternoon of a pair of helicopters), he has received over 125,000 birthday cards (some with money in (totalling another £60,000), which has been added to the NHS charity fundraising money), he has been appointed as an honorary colonel, he has a record at the Number One spot, and he has raised over £32 million (and still climbing)! The family will be closing that fundraising page at midnight tonight. The Post Office is also painting the local pillar box NHS Blue, and (for this week) their postmark is wishing Captain Tom Moore a happy 100th birthday.

The Queens' Birthday Honour List has been delayed to allow for any more COVID 19 heroes to also be recognised. It is likely the investitures will happen in November.
