2014 3008 1.6HDi fuel priming
Hi
Could anybody tell me if it is necessary to prime the fuel system after the fuel filter has been changed and a pair of fuel injectors replaced, as on my engine I cannot see any priming bulb.
Is it somehow self priming or do I need a syphon arrangement to draw fuel from the tank and then push it back through the new filter removing the air, and then connect the pipe to the engine and push fuel towards the injectors.
As per this video
Thanks for any guidance
Graham

Some are not self priming. If you can't see a priming bulb it may be a little pump that is integral with the fuel filter - look for a plastic button sticking out of the top.
You can usually tell the self priming ones as the in tank pump will run for about five seconds on turning the ignition key.

Re: 2014 3008 1.6HDi fuel priming
Steve is correct Graham, there is a procedure to do this which involves connecting the T union connectors before and after priming - see here. The priming pump is (9).
Connect the male and female unions (Ø 10 mm) of the tool [4215-T / 1604-C] in place of the union (8) (at "k", "l").
Disconnect the fuel return union (3a) and insert the union (Ø 8 mm) of tool [4215-T / 1604-C] in the fuel return circuit (at "j").
Close: The pipe (3a) using tool [1520-B / 5705-T].
Operate the manual priming pump 120 for (9) seconds to prime the fuel circuit.
Remove:
Operate the manual priming pump (9) several times to prime the fuel circuit.
Remove:
- The tool [4215-T / 1604-C]
- The tool [1520-B / 5705-T] from the union (3a)
Operate the manual priming pump (9) several times to prime the fuel circuit.

They seem hell-bent on making the simple things as difficult as possible. Who is going to have one of those tools around when it is needed.
I was only partly right - I presumed that it was just a matter of pumping with the button on the filter, not all that carry on.

Re: 2014 3008 1.6HDi fuel priming
There's also a pre-cursor to this - the bleeding of the water in diesel - which requires the bleed device to be moved before and after the priming. They are certainly a lot more involved now as they try to get more out of the engine, compacting everything, saving weight and the like to met the EU standards.....

Re: 2014 3008 1.6HDi fuel priming
Thanks Marc and Steve for your input.
This suddenly seems a lot more complicated than I hoped. I certainly don't have the tube adapters and T piece to follow the official procedure.
On the plus side I haven't actually changed the filter yet so there is still diesel in that, however there will be some air in the various fuel lines as I disconnected the filter and two of the injectors. (there is no diesel in the fuel return lines but that's probably not an issue).
I guess my options are
1 Put it all back together and give it a try, and change the filter after I have had it all up and running with the new injector (after coding).
2 Change the filter as it is readily accessible and then with a vacuum device of some description carry out the process as defined in the video, although the priming pump on the filter may be a problem here.
3 Disconnect the fuel lines to all of the injectors and let some fuel be pushed through. Access isn't great for this and I would prefer not to have diesel all over the top of the engine. On reflection I could put a tube over the injector feed pipe to catch the fuel in a container. I would prefer to leave the two injectors
that have not been removed undisturbed.
4 Purchase the tools mentioned by Marc from Peugeot (are Peugeot dealers open?)
I think a combination of 1 and 3 is what I favour at the moment but I am very open to any suggestions.
Marc sorry to bother you again could you clarify what is meant by the following as I am unsure
"the bleeding of the water in diesel - which requires the bleed device to be moved before and after the priming"
Any ideas/recommendations much appreciated.
Cheers
Graham
PS I am glad I found this site it seems to be a very good source of information

Re: 2014 3008 1.6HDi fuel priming
I am in the garage re assembling and I have to refit the throttle body after I removed it to improve access. The seal looks Ok and I will put a smear of grease on it to ensure a good seal however I don’t know the tightening torque does anybody have a suggestion? The 4 bolts are only M6 and my gut feeling is 20Nm.

Re: 2014 3008 1.6HDi fuel priming
My gut was quite wrong, depending on what sort of steel is used the max torque on an M6 varies from 9Nm to 14Nm

Re: 2014 3008 1.6HDi fuel priming
A quick update. Everything in the engine bay is back together and I called in a mobile mechanic to code the injector, prime the fuel system and then start the engine which seemed to go very well, with the engine starting on the first turn of the key. The mechanic then told me that I had to drive the car for a few miles as the check engine light (CEL) was flashing which would clear after the ecu had learned the new settings. I am sure you can guess that the light didn't go out, when I took the car out a few hours later after refitting the various bits of trim and the essential for today, windscreen wipers! In fairness the mechanic said if it doesn't go out to just call and he will come back, which he is doing tomorrow.
During the synchronising run I drove the car gently as requested by the mechanic and apart from the flashing light all seemed well, however as soon as I tried to increase the engine speed in any gear, I discovered that the engine would be limited to a maximum speed of 2800rpm. The distance covered was about 8 miles and plugging my code reader into the OBD port gave the message no codes.
I have done a little reading now regarding the check engine light and have seen some recommendations to disconnect the battery then reconnect after 10 minutes which I have done and unfortunately no change. I then took a much longer drive of 20 miles and the same conditions were observed with engine limiting to 2800rpm, no DTC codes and the CEL still flashing.
Could anybody offer any advice?
Graham

Re: 2014 3008 1.6HDi fuel priming
Engine speed limitation is a backup mode initiated by the engine ECU when something is not right. In such a case there should be a fault code, but whether your code reader can actually read it is another potential issue. If you are using a generic code reader, these will vary on their capabilities and not all can read the extended codes used by the constructor.
If you have such a fault, your code reader may not pick it up. A backup mode is almost always triggered for a specific fault, I would suggest you get a Global Test done with Diagbox, as that can pull up all fault codes generated. It should also be able to pull off a fault log of any codes temporarily triggered that have self -cleared, so you could at least see what has been happening, which may give you a clue.

Re: 2014 3008 1.6HDi fuel priming
The check engine light was flashing not on solid which apparently indicates it is in an update mode. The light cleared when he drove it less than a couple of miles. The reason that it didn't clear with me was apparently due to me not varying the rpm enough.
It now pulls very strongly so I am happy and have saved some cash doing the injector myself. I hope the other injectors keep functioning although I have the knowledge to swap them out now.
Thanks everyone that gave me some guidance over the fuel priming and injector problems in my earlier post.
Have a good weekend

For any others looking in i found a YouTube video on diesel fuel filter change. Very straightforward and it does show how to prime the system.
