Re: On Your Virtual Bike:The Pennine Cycleway (&quiz)
Great minds think alike! I went for the beef:
and Bob had the gammon:
Both followed by a slice of Parkin
and a pint of Thwaites Best to wash it down.
Now bring on that climb!!

Re: On Your Virtual Bike:The Pennine Cycleway (&quiz)
Well we came over a rise to be greeted with this view
so we rode on to the building which turned out to be Blake Dean Scout Hostel nestling in the U bend on the road:
A Fascinating place so I borrowed Bob's drone to get a quick aerial view so you can see exactly where it can be found:
From here we'll peddle up to Widdop Reservoir to see its claim to fame and have a paddle.
Pennine Cycleway Quiz Question Day 3 Number 6 is: What is the reservoir's claim to fame?

As I approached Burnley on my route I looked over to my left in a Westerly direction and spotted a pantopticon and felt a quiz question coming on.

What do I associate Burnley with?
Turf Moor and Burnley FC, and the Northern Cross-Country Championships 1975 in the usual duff weather in the middle of winter.
So here is an easily researched Question even for non-football/sport folks.

Who is this Player?
He played for Burnley/Tottenham Hotspur/Leyton Orient and (specially for Mick) Hertford Heath when he dropped into non-league football. He won 4 Caps for England. He was born in the same village as a well known wing-half who started his playing career with Bishop Auckland, and went on to achieve greater things with Liverpool,

Thats It Mick
Lancashire is of course a hotbed of cricket tradition. James mentioned James Anderson who is a Burnley lad, but its fascinating to just have a look at the Lancashire Leagues and the calibre of player they had as professionals
Wiki lists these, its a who's who of great cricketers. I wondered as the afternoon teas and the spares were wolfed down at the Pavillion at Colne, whether any of the "greats" turned out for little Colne CC. Havent dug round to find out yet.

Lancashire League (cricket) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lancashir ... _(cricket)The professionals
The existence of the Lancashire League is a testament to local cricketers and their supporters, but the sheer quantity and quality of the professional cricketers that have been drawn to the milltowns of East Lancashire and the surrounding area is astonishing. Players from all over the world have come to live and play in the League including: Dik Abed, Bill Alley, Nyron Asgarali, Nathan Astle, Sydney Barnes, Allan Border, Chris Cairns, Sir Learie Constantine, Kapil Dev, Allan Donald, Bruce Dooland, Roy Gilchrist, Dennis Lillee, Trevor Chappell, Jason Gillespie, Kerry O'Keeffe, Charlie Griffith, Andrew Hall, Wes Hall, Roger Harper, Chris Harris, George Headley, Michael Holding, Murali Kartik, Charlie Llewellyn, Clive Lloyd, Manny Martindale, Cec Pepper, Viv Richards, Andy Roberts, Fred Root, Jacques Rudolph, Peter Sleep, 'Big' Jim Smith, Hugh Tayfield, George Tribe, Lou Vincent, Shane Warne, Chester Watson, Steve Waugh, Bilawal Bhatti, Alviro Petersen, Robin Petersen and Everton Weekes.[1] It is a rule of the competition that each team must have a professional player in their squad. Should the professional be unavailable then a substitute must be found. Teams not playing a pro can be fined.

Wonder if you remember Bryan Robson Mick. Not the Man U and England Captain, but a former Newcastle Number 9 who also played with West Ham and Sunderland and even made 15 Appearances for Chelsea scoring 3 goals.
He was also born in the same place as the player correctly identified, and had the same sort of hair challenges in his later career.
Regards Neil

Re: On Your Virtual Bike:The Pennine Cycleway (&quiz)
And now I have to deliver the news. That phone call was asking for my assistance in a real world crisis which has cropped up. It means I will quite probably have to arrange a helicopter to pick me up at the B&B tomorrow morning and buzz down to Berkhamstead where I will be helping a mate replace rear discs and pads on the MX3 in order to permit him to visit his sick father. I will of course fly back to Yorkshire in the evening to rejoin the ride. Fortunately Bob will be able to take my bike on his trailer if someone else would please tow the canoe trailer tomorrow and I will then be fully equipped to ride again on Friday. Any suggestions?
It won't affect this evenings plans of course!
And yes Neil I remember "Pop" Robson as the boys in the shed used to call him. I have a vivid memory of him flying down the wing and slide tackling the corner flag at Highbury!!

Mick I have just installed myself in a room at the Stone Trough, just having a chill and a catch up, might throw up the odd gem after reviewing my ride today. That was a substantial afternoon tea at the pavillion, but should we do something like go for an Indian (if there are any) or have something at the Stone trough and head up to McCulloughs Bar later.
