As they use Phosphoric acid, perhaps a splash of that would do the trick?

Amazon have it.

Looking at the Deox Gel followed by Hydrate 90 on the Bilt Hamber site at the moment. Both have excellant reviews. I want to stay away from acids....'cause I'll underneath getting dripped on.

As Chris has said Finnigans has now been taken over by Akzo Nobel. The factory when it WAS Finnigans was just outside the village I grew up in. Back then it was just 2 big wooden garages, then it moved to its current site which used to be the ICI paint factory a couple of miles to the east at Eltringham, between Stocksfield where I come from, and Prudhoe. It was initially owned by a family from the village, but was sold in the early 80s I knew of Allen Forster, but didn’t know him personally, I do know his eldest son though.The company now trades as Hammerite Products, Prior to Hammerite, they used to do a rust proofing substance that was sprayed on called Waxoyl. The advertising was Finnigans Waxoyl stops the rust.

You can make your own waxoyl-like goop with white spirit, a bit of grease, and a lot of old (or new) candles.
Oh - and a fire extinguisher! :sprint:
If you use a lot fewer candles (and no grease!) you have a very effective tent waterproofing treatment.

Mini update, I think all the products are good, but checking shipping etc I've gone for 2 litres of Fertan. Also used by people with narrow boats. Hopefully on the 11th I can go to a mates place with a pit and get the wire brushes out.

Take great care with Fertan, Pete.
It contains phosphoric acid and heavy metal compounds, and has a pH of 1.4∼2, which is extremely acidic.
Eye and skin protection essential.
MSDS sheet is online (Fertan rust converter MSDS).

Thanks very much Chris for the heads up. I didn't realise. I presumed it would be relatively safe due to the blurb stating it's water based and can be sprayed. Googles and gloves it is then. I will certainly read the safety notice for all products I buy from now on and not trust the sales definition.

Right then, I've found another issue. First noticed it last week when coming down the motorway with another poorly toy in the back. It's the first time I've driven over 60mph, normally I sit at the 80kph speed limit and don't accelerate hard. The issue is that it doesn't like being above 3000rpm under load. It's like it's panting / gasping rhythmically every 3 secs. Don't know if it's gasping for air of fuel. On the motorway I was in 5th at about 70mph going up a hill, just now in 4th at 60 going up a hill. I revs freely in the 1st 3 gears. It starts fine, pulls well from 1000rpms in 3rd (don't know if this is normal) but does seem to run out of torque and will just hold 50mph in 5th up a steepish hill at 2200rpms which I would expect to be it's 'sweet spot'. I think I may have noticed this 'panting' just off idle in 2nd when the van has just started, i.e. when I'm creeping up the lane putting my belt on. I'll plug it in to see if there are any codes but if I was to induce this, in 4th, where would I look for clues in the live data?
Tootling around you wouldn't know anything was wrong. I've no idea if it accelerates normally for a 90hp 1.6 because I've got nothing to compare it with, but I would say 'it's not nippy'.
Any pointers gents will be much appreciated.

Plugged Diag in, no errors. The actuator arm moves about a cm when the car is started, it can also be pressed in manually. Went for a run, same problem in 4th as mentioned above but by keeping my hoof down I could drive through it. Looked through the live data. The only thing that sticks out is the turbo pos'n indicator stays at 100% and the ref value moved from 43 to about 47%. I've got some mercury gauges for balancing the carbs on my bike and wondered if I could rig these up somewhere to check the vacuum. Also I believe the turbo was changed when Rich had it and wondered how to check it's been set up. I read somewhere that you put a known vacuum on it and the actuator arm should move a certain distance?
Has anyone got a picture of the mounting for the vacuum solenoid, a mates got a pit. I'm thinking about taking it off and cleaning the foam filter.
