Re: On Your Virtual Bike:The Pennine Cycleway (&quiz)
Given that I heard the answer I would simply say they mean a city which is entirely surrounded by water (which I hadn't realised) and can only be accessed by bridge or boat or aircraft of course, have to be VTOL though I should think unless it could use an existing road as a runway. to limit your search I will tell you it is in western Europe.

Re: On Your Virtual Bike:The Pennine Cycleway (&quiz)
Due to availability of ingredients I had to modify the recipe a tad: 1½ spoons Gold Blend, 2 spoons half spoon, a measure of Kahlua and topped with hazlenut yoghurt!! Sounds disgusting, looks very iffy but tastes delicious, have to christen it a Hertford Hammer!!
Mints are great, got those!!
When I said Western Europe I meant the UK!! in fact try the South of the UK!!

Re: On Your Virtual Bike:The Pennine Cycleway (&quiz)
That was going to be my next guess I'll have to watch that episode for their precise definition of City and island hoping for a shout at the telly moment when they reveal their answer. Then I will write a stiff letter and point them in the direction of Birmingham. Hopefully that will give their researchers a bit of work tracing the canals around Brum and various other cities round the globe and seeing if they join up. I think they are going to dig a canal around Istanbul to ease shipping congestion, which could well be the daddy of them all.

Re: On Your Virtual Bike:The Pennine Cycleway (&quiz)
I think I'll adopt my customary routine today and dilly dally and watch Ashes to Ashes on the B&B telly. I do like Hebden Bridge though so a sociable rendezvous might be nice. I've been out already and its a far better day for crisp shadows on the road, blue skies and sunshine.
The day 3 Route on the rough Guide takes us from Slaithwaite through Sowerby Bridge, Hebden Bridge, Heptonstall,
From one account of the Pennine Cycleway
"It leads to the postcard-perfect Heptonstall, after which the route splits: left to Burnley for 18 miles partly on a canal towpath, right for 10 miles over the moors. We’d strongly recommend the latter, a spectacular ride through isolated countryside." with the overnight stay at Barnoldswick.
This is the NCN overlain on an OS map the zoom in/out slider gets down to quite a detailed map. Useful for seeing the detail of the route.
Looks like you have to go through the sustrans site to link to the overlay on the map

Morning all!! A very crisp image there on POTD Neil!! Our culture secretary has suggested a lunch time meet at The Shoulder of Mutton in Hebdon Bridge, purely because it is an unusual pub name! The reviews look ok and it looks pretty popular so I'm happy with it, are you? :

Re: On Your Virtual Bike:The Pennine Cycleway (&quiz)
If anyone is interested we thought, having spent yesterday remembering Last of the Summer Wine, that we would call in to Ripponden for morning coffee and cakes at Robin's Nest. Which naturally generates Pennine Cycleway Quiz Question Day 3 Number 1: Name as many characters and double points for the actors as you can?

Excellent just finished off Ashes to ashes so raring to go. Gorgeous day out there planning to have a little electric ride to help out with the hills to come further down the 68, after lunch with my camera.mickthemaverick wrote: ↑20 May 2020, 11:14 Morning all!! I've got a question to think about for Hebden Bridge and the answer is amongst my very own archives on the Forum.

Where to these trains which regularly thunder through Hebden Bridge Station go from and to (or to and from)

Re: On Your Virtual Bike:The Pennine Cycleway (&quiz)
Not a lot of choice for B&B at Barnoldswick tonight, three main offerings all of which have their bad points so for the least of the evils I suggest we head for The Old Stone Trough just SE of Barnoldswick centre. Not the greatest but at least we won't need cabs!! Let me know if you'd like me to book a room for you when I call them at lunchtime.
