Re: On Your Virtual Bike:The Pennine Cycleway (&quiz)
We have just ridden up through Meltham and we were surprised to hear the sound of go-karts buzzing around. When we went to investigate we came across another interesting fact from the history of the area which linked it back to Slaithwaite via the answer to Q4. so Question 7 Can you dig up that link?
I used to be indecisive, now I'm not so sure!

I assume that I might be overdressed if I turn up in this clobber (and somebody might chuck a lump of coal at my hat). Mind you, I might bring a guest, and she has a nice set of wheels;

Here is a question for you;
Which horse (that caused her so much joy in one year) cost Her Majesty a loss of winnings, why, and why was nobody (in the stables) in trouble for this?

Re: On Your Virtual Bike:The Pennine Cycleway (&quiz)
Possibly, but not the horse I had in mind. A (weak) clue is in my pictures.
EDIT; Nicky Henderson, trainer, did receive a 3 month ban (basically, for that three months he could not enter any horses into races; owners who wanted their horses to race during that three month period had to send their horses elsewhere), so, no, not Moonlit Path.

I would say it is a lot less obscure although I do like your answer. I think the answer on the card is obvious when you come across it!!NewcastleFalcon wrote: ↑19 May 2020, 19:50 Is the question as obscure as my answer?Regards Neil

Re: On Your Virtual Bike:The Pennine Cycleway (&quiz)
Now James try this is the Her Majesty you are talking about Her Majesty the Queen, or Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother.Hell Razor5543 wrote: ↑19 May 2020, 19:37 Here is a question for you;

If so would Devon Loch fit the bill, and the 1956 Grand National where he "jumped" a non existant fence when poised to win the race. Afterwards the Queen Mother said "Oh, thats racing" with no repercussions for jockey Dick Francis or the stables.

Sorry, I should have made it clearer. The Queen is the owner in question.NewcastleFalcon wrote: ↑19 May 2020, 20:14Now James try this is the Her Majesty you are talking about Her Majesty the Queen, or Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother.Hell Razor5543 wrote: ↑19 May 2020, 19:37 Here is a question for you;

I have read "The Sport of Queens" by Dick Francis, and he believed that Devon Loch was not too tired, and was not trying to jump a non-existent fence. What he believed (but nobody but Devon Loch could really know) was that, as they were on the run in, the crowd was going wild (after all, it looked like there was going to be a Royal horse winning the Grand National). Devon Loch had his ears back (as is normal in a race, horses often listen to their jockeys), was running well (hard, but well), heard the noise (very faintly initially), flicked his ears forward to hear what the noise was, and got a wall of sound slamming down his ears (horses have very good hearing). Because of this he was very startled and tried to get away from it, with the results we know about.
Once Devon Loch was up and about again he was given a very thorough examination, but there was nothing obviously wrong, so it was put down as one of those things. If he had been exhausted I feel certain that this would have been looked into, and Dick Francis might have had to answer some stern questions.

OK James how about Estimate, disqualified from 2nd place in the Gold Cup in 2014, having won it in 2013, after testing positive for morphine. It was believed to have come from contaminated food so no one was blamed?
