You'd not get many people on a train that size. What were they thinking ? :-D
Sadly no longer a C5 owner :(

Had a similar problem to Neil when I woke at the Ibis - no cycling gear! Being less inventive than Neil, but having the car with me meant I could at least use my crash helmet for the first part until I found a cycle shop. So I donned the helmet:
Own work
Own work
and set off to scare the locals at Derby Station. Bob was there waiting for me and raring to go on his newly aquired GT Sportster:

We attached the trailers from the freight office pound where we had sent them and set off for Etwall which was only a couple of miles:

where we found a pretty village:

but we had to cycle straight to the old railway station:

where the route 68 originally began.

We set off along the disused track heading for Sutton on the Hill where we came across the first interesting sign of our trip:
BFTW

Bob pointed out that we needn't worry because the cows would be terrified of me in the helmet :-D

Passing by St Michael's Church in Sutton:
BFTW
BFTW
we headed out past a second sign that made us both smile!

Not much chance of that or we'd be stopped!!

So we headed up the route towards Longford. By the time we got there we had done at least 6 miles so we felt a brief stop was called for. Luckily we found a suitable hostel and quenched our thirsts with a first half of the day. The Pedigree was excellent!!:
BFTW

While taking our refreshment we got chatting to the landlord and he told us about our first interesting fact of the day. Just up the road was the cheese factory building where the first cheese factory in England was founded:

So we had a brief look and then headed off to Ashbourne to find a few more of our party. See you there! :)

First stop Ashbourne Mick? No doubt you had an all you can eat breakfast at the Ibis but I reckon I'll be more than ready for a bit of refreshment in Ashbourne. Seeing as I have acquired an Ashes to Ashes addiction, while yourself and Bob make your way out of Derby I'll just get the final episode of series one out of the way.

Bob tells me that the smallest cafe in Derbyshire is in Ashbourne so I suggest we meet there for brunch?

Just made one selection on the virtual Jukebox at the real Tunnel Cafe, hope Derbyshire likes Roger Hodgson, episode ender on Ashes to Ashes so fresh in my mind, and with 300 miles to go I will be taking the long way home :-D
Not the most brilliant of Jukeboxes you have to press at least 2 buttons to make it work!

Do you and Bob want to send some postcards Mick? Ashbourne is well provided with post boxes!

Still mooching around Ashbourne, but the milepost had me wondering if Ashbourne was on a coaching route from London to Manchester via Derby. Well luckily for some bedtime reading after a hard day in the saddle I did grab at the last minute my copy of Cary's. Answer not really, the main Manchester-London Coaches went via Buxton and Matlock.

Did find in my meanderings though "The Cock" at Whaley Bridge

Anyone fancy a hot pot?
Pennine Cycleway Quiz Question Number 4
Who was once the landlady of that pub, and who was Treacle?

While looking round Ashbourne we've come across The Bike Barn:

so I was able to get myself a slightly more appropriate helmet:

Brunch was good although we missed Neil and no sign of Bobins coming up behind yet!!

So now we are off to Tissington and then maybe a latish liquid lunch at the aforementioned Quiet Woman?

I'm sticking with the bowler, might even get some dye at a hardware store and jazz it up a bit for each day of the ride.
Yes we should get a bit more in sync so I'll call in for a swift half at the quiet woman. Can I order a morose grumpy landlord/landlady though? All adds to the "patina" of a trip and I really dont like the sign. Lets hope he knows his pickled eggs though, and there is a decent virtual jukebox.

Cheers Neil

Just ridden past Tissington, a pretty looking place:

BFTW
and now we are on the route to Heathcote:

and I can see the sign for Heathcote approaching:

.

That's the 25 mile mark so just another 6 to meet Neil for a pint, and anyone else that catches up, or is already there of course!! :-D
