Hi, I have a very clunky noise from my friends 2001 Xsara Picasso.
Its has only 160k km (100K mls) and it clunks a lot on the right side when accelerating and de-accelerating.
So far I checked the following.
Steering rack has no play
wishbones has no play
top struts not sure but, doesn't come from above.
Droplinks has zero play
Could it be the lower engine mounts?

Re: 2001 Xsara picasso clunking noise
It could be any of the bushes on the front axle and giving it a push or a pull whilst on the ground isn't going to cut it.
The front wishbones can make a clunk on acceleration and braking, but you won't always be able to replicate it on the ground. It needs putting on a lift and then looking at - the weight of the vehicle accelerating and braking is sometimes what will make the clunking whilst on the ground, but if on a lift, a mechanic can sometimes show the movement with a lever. I had this on my C5 - clunking on one side when sometimes braking and accelerating and going over a bump or dip. It was one of the wishbone bushes that could be forced to slide back and forth when it was on the 4 post lift. Had them both replaced.

Re: 2001 Xsara picasso clunking noise
Is it the pulleys on the drive belts? These can make a racket if coming loose / worn. You should be able to tell by looking and listening as the engine is revved though. They should generally be changed when having hte timing belt done - but a lot of people only focus on the belt itself and forget the pulleys and rollers,

The crank pulley on the HDI's can kick up all sorts of strange noises.

Re: 2001 Xsara picasso clunking noise
Seems to be a broken engine mount. Typical done many now. Exhaust inside is also rotten away that explains also the noise when starting.
