Trying to find oil leakage XUD9

Post by CPtje »

My campervan with 1.9td XUD9 has an oil leakage and I am trying to find where. After cleaning I can find following when looking from underneath the van at the top back of the engine.
IMG_20200513_155307_1~2.jpg
This is after driving only 50 miles. There is noticeable oil on that "flex metal tube". Sorry, no idea how these are called.

If I look at the front of the engine this metal flex tube is at the back of the engine and not easily accessible. So at the back of the parts you see in the next picture. More or less between the upper part and the engine.

So, can anybody please tell me how to get to this part or maybe what might be the cause of the oil being there?

A metal flexy about there would suggest EGR pipe. Make sure it's clipped up properly. Has it been 'blocked'?

As far as I can see the "vacuum tube" controlling the EGR valve is just disconnected and a screw Is plugged into this tube. Is that sufficient?
How can I access this EGR pipe? It is not accessible from the back. Do I need to take the valve cover of or should I proceed in another way?

I want to find out how all this oil can be on the outside of this pipe.

I don't want to give you bad news, but i've got one leaking in the same place on a 405 same engine, and after taking out the engine it turn out to be the head gasket, it leaks on the seam in between the head and block, i'm still running it like that 4 years now makes a mess where it seats.

In your first photo, CP, it all looks vert clean and dry - just the oil on the outside of the EGR pipe.
What is the rubber hose running across it?

Try heaving that rubber pipe to one side, and then cleaning up the oil spill.
Then see exactly where it is coming from.

EGR pipes normally carry hot, dry exhaust, and not oily vapour.
Turbo inlet (and intercooler) pipework can get quite oily, though.

If it is higher than the intake manifold then can be only two things, camshaft oil seal or rocker cover gasket, the gasket is very cheap and easy to change, but always use silicone on the corners and the cam caps.

It will go into the metal Plenum chamber above the rocker box (PSA versions have plastic plenums). On the PSA versions of this engine the plenum slots into 4 rubber pipes on the inlet manifold. They go hard and leak. IF your's has the same system that would be I'd be looking, if not, cam cover gasket. It would be worth taking the plenum off anyway and giving it a good clean. Get hold of a BOLs for your variant though before attacking it. Or ask on a Fiat forum.

Thank guys for helping me out here.
OK, so to start with; the cam cover gasket. This would also allow me to see a little more of what is going on at the back.

Is this just taking off the cam cover with the 3 screws (only 3?)? Nothing else to take special care of?

Then the plenum: I have the feeling that it is not easy to take that one of (the big metal piece with the big black hose going in from the front?). It looks as if it screwed to the back of the engine, so it seems very difficult accessible without taking the engine out. What do you mean with "Get hold of a BOLs"?

But I start with the cam cover....ordering the gasket and the silicon (anything special?)

CPtje, come on it is a XUD9 is the simplest engine ever made by peugeot, the black hose is the breather, if it's hard to touch buy a new one, they are also cheap and easy to replace, only two hose clamps. Then take off the 3 bolts on top and take it off, due to you intake manifold, taking the two more bolts from your charge pipe will give you better access. Pay attention when inspecting the corners of the gasket when you take it off they should be dry and have small amounts of automotive silicone. If you find oil on the mating surface there you've found your leak. Also very important to not over torque the 3 bolts holding the cover on i've seen them broken many times, i hope this helps, and my advice is don't be intimidated, my first 405 came from Netherlands, i know they are popular there and you've got parts available, anything can be fixed easily when you can get the parts.

Did it! Although it took a little longer than expected. The cam cover could not be removed to the front because the plenum was too low. Because I couldn't find how to remove the plenum (even after removing the charge pipe), I had to remove the brake pressure pump at the right side on the engine. Now I was able to remove the cam cover by sliding it sideways. It worked and I was able to replace the gasket. There was no silicon whatsoever on the older gasket, so hopefully this works now.

However!!!!
After some more inspection I found also oil leaking from the bottom of the "oil filler" (that long black plastic pipe that is stuck onto the engine and holds the oil dipstick). It is not flooding but certainly wet, wet, wet. I will need to take of the alternator to inspect this further and to be able to unscrew the clamp (not original) and take this of. Is this a known place to cause oil leaking out? What can I expect and is there already some parts that I need to order to get this "oil-tight"? (Gasket?)

On some of my engines are also wet there, but is not a leak, there is a O ring on the pipe that is sticking out of the engine block, i don't remember it was like 22mm standard o'ring, but in my opinion the wetness there is cause more of the oil vapors, don't forget your engine is running at 85-90 degrees all day long, the oil is almost boiling so any water vapor in the oil will past thru there. Clean it, drive it and check if is not an active leak don't spend the time and effort.

 That's good advice with any leak: clean it off and watch it from scratch.
