Dash Cam

Post by citroen since 1973 »

Does anyone know if the wiring, or even the camera is prefitted on my 2018 C4 Grand Space Cruiser Flair please? I'm thinking of getting a camera fitted but have come across Connected cam Citroen APP and wonder if this is already on board.

Not unless it was specified or included as part of your trim level or any upgrades specified.

Wiring harnesses are supplied in lots of different combinations and segments depending on equipment, so if the camera was not fitted as standard, then it's highly likely the specific wiring harness for it is not there.

Don't forget the Citroen connected App is just the software. You still need the have the camera fitted. It should be visible from the windscreen where the rear view mirror is located if you have it

Thanks for your help Marc.

There is, what looks like, a camera lens in the rather neat housing around the rear view centre mirrors. This faces the window screen, in an aperture that flairs out towards the screen, providing a wide angle. I haven't checked further, but I suppose that this could be associated with the automatic safety braking system the car has. I certainly can't find anything about a dash cam in the in-car info centre, via the touch screen menus. That said, the system is not very user friendly and the ambiguous nature of the car user handbooks these day - one handbook for all cars, not showing anything specific for "your car", makes trying to find info specific to ones car, very difficult.

I'll try the dealer next week, but I often get the impression that they know even less than me. Gone are the days when I could buy a C5 Exclusive and know that I was getting a "fully loaded" car! This is what I thought when I was told that the C4 Grand Space Tourer I purchased, with leather seats and zenon headlights, was the top of the range by the Citroen dealer I bought it from.

Thanks again,

Paul

The distance alert function (called ARTIV) is actually mounted inside the front left bumper, just above and right of the fog lamp. So it wont be that I suspect.

Citroen Connected Nav is the name of the telematics system in the vehicle (GPS Sat. Nav., Applications, Multimedia Audio System and Bluetooth phone).

I think you'll find that the sensor at the top of the windscreen is the rain and brightness sensor for the auto lights and wipers.

Re: Dash Cam

After a bit more reading it's now apparent that a dash cam function isn't available on the C4 yet. It is available for new C3 & C5 Aircross SUV's.

The camera at the top of the windscreen has 3 functions -

1 Active Safety Brake/Collision Risk Alert/Intelligent Emergency Braking Assitance

2 Active Lane Departure Warning System

3 Driver Attention Alert (fatique detection system)

This is a camera, but it doesn't look like it can also be adapted for use as a a safety dash cam. Looking at the pictures for the "ConnectedCAM Citroen system", it does look completely different to what I have and much more like a "normal" looking dash cam set up.

So, if I continue with this it's looking like I need something like a Nextbase 212, on offer currently at Aldi and Amazon for around £46/47.

Thanks once again for your help Mark.

Can I suggest that you look at dashcams which also have a rear camera. I have a double camera setup in my C5 X7 for the last couple of years which replaced a single camera. The single camera is now in the 308 but I have a double camera kit ready to replace it there as well.

It is more difficult to fit tidily (which is why the 308 hasn't been done yet!) but the end result is well worth it. I also fitted a much smaller front camera held to windscreen with an adhesive pad, almost the same as Marc's, which I think is much tidier than the type held on with a sucker.

The first one I bought was sold under the manufacturer name Apeman but I think that is just a badge and many other sellers sell them under different names. This is the type I bought https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/APEMAN-In-Ca ... Sw6jJcv6BP but NOT the seller - I bought it through Aliexpress.

The second one was the same type but a different name that I can't remember now.

One thing I made sure of was they both would accept large capacity micro-SD cards (over 32GB). I would recommend a 128GB card if you can stretch to it.

I notice that the one I linked to actually says maximum 32GB,

I have now remembered that the first camera (for the C5) was an I-Tentek B40D and I bought it through Amazon for £54.50 in June 2017. I don't remember where I bought the 128GB card from.

The second camera (the Apeman) was also bought from Amazon. I looked it up and I paid £44.99 in November 2017. I paid a further £31.99 for a 128GB micro SDXC card. I remember that I bought it then as a Black Friday purchase.

The camera I bought from Aliexpress was a disappointment in several respects. The file format used for recording was extremely inefficient (MJPEG I think) and no matter whether 1 second or 3 minutes long always gave the same file length. The rear camera was several degrees off from horizontal on its mounting and not easily adjustable. The plug-in power supply was also the noisiest I've ever encountered. The radio noise it generated flattened the radio front end for all but the strongest signals. The only thing I might have used from it was the micro SD card!
As I get older I think a lot about the hereafter - I go into a room and then wonder what I'm here after.

Following some yahoo crashing a supermarket trolley into the back of my car at a tesco carpark then sodding off leaving me with a dented car and no contact details I fitted a front and rear dash cam to my x7. I went for a thinkware f100 system with wiring loom to connect to the car. It works very well and the software is easy to use. It also has various telemetery add ons if you want them. Hardest part was hiding the wiring. 3 years later its still working perfectly. I mounted the front directly infront of the rear view mirror so it wouldnt obscure driving view, the rear is tucked neatly in the top middle of the rear window. Only mistake I made was first installation of the front camera was slightly too high and just out of the arc of the wipers. Let me know if you want photos.
Marc made an excellent installation guide detailing which fuses to use as power source.
