Sticking solenoid Xantia

Post by cal1962 »

Hi all
First post here, so please be patient.
My 1999 Xantia 1.9TD ,which I bought last year from forum member Chris, has started being a complete bugger to start.
Sometimes ok but more frequently now doing the familiar click when the key is turned, usually starts if i give the starter a dunt with a suitable heavy metal thing.
Tried having a look at the replacing of said motor but in the usual citroen fashion it seems buried under many cables etc.
Question is how difficult is it to get out, do I need to replace the motor or just the solenoid, and if its a swine to do, does anyone kow of any Citroen savvy mechanics in the Aberdeenshire area who might be able to do the job for me.

Hi, and :welc: to the Forum.

I cannot offer you any Xantia advice, but I have replaced the starter motor on a C5 (and helped to replace one on a Berlingo), and they are not too difficult to do, if you are careful. If you are getting a replacement starter motor I would avoid Euro Car Parts (they have an unfortunate but self inflicted reputation), but GSF are OK. When I got my re-conditioned Bosch starter motor from them they provided it in packaging, and if I returned the old motor they gave me a partial 'refund' (Bosch need old motors to re-condition), so the total cost was about £80.

Never needed to take one out of an XUD but I think it's 3 bolts, one may be hidden and depending on water / hydraulic hoses may be a pain. No harder than an alternator I imagine, they're a pain on hydraulic Cits. You can probably take it out, take it apart and clean it. Just done my Landy, they're not rocket science. Depends how busy you are and how much you need the car turned around...and how long it takes to get in and out. The first time is always 4 times longer than the second. Good luck and welcome.

Its easy, here's a pic of what it looks like with an engine out of the car (note mine's a 1.9 non-turbo Diesel in a 405, essentially the same though)

You'll need a
H6 Hex, two bolts on the top, one at the bottom
13mm for the main Feed
8mm for the Solenoid Feed (or is it 6mm, Hmm?)

And check beforehand which way you're gonna physically remove the Unit once its unbolted.

You'll likely notice that the pics have been taken on different occasions

I'm here looking to see if I can find a way to tighten up the Injectors on my 1.4HDi without removing the Fuel Filter Assembly... apparently there's a way. S
