When you pull the stalk back do the front wipers sweep as normal a few times even though the rear washer is operating? does the back wiper sweep when you pull the stalk?

That still sounds like the pump is faulty. The set-up on the Mk1 C5 is that the pump rotates one way to feed the front and then in reverse to feed the rear. There's a little shuttle valve to make sure that the fluid is directed correctly and IIRC that's the part that goes wrong inside the pump.

Just an off-chance question. Does the car have headlamp washers and, if so, are you sure you replaced the correct pump?

I've replaced loads of pumps for this fault so its the first thing I would have said if you hadn't replaced it twice, did you get the replacement pumps from Euro Car Parts / Car parts for less by any chance?

I'd suggest that's your issue. I've lost count of the number of members here who have had faulty parts from these people (myself included).

If you can, try getting your parts from GSF (I have no links to them). They have decent prices, they know what they are on about, and I have never had a 'suspect' part from them.

How did I guess?
Yes avoid ECP junk unless its a known brand name, Their cheap stuff is cheap for a reason.
A mate of mines once got three faulty brake switches in a row from ECP.

Had that years ago.
The rubber sliding piston in the pump swells and stops moving between front and rear wipers.
Cutting off about 5 mm fixed it and it's still good after years.

If you do decide to take your washer fluid container out then can I suggest you take the opportunity to thoroughly clean the insides to remove any dirt or other potential washer jet blockers.
