Some more browsing on Youtube today led me back to an episode of my absolute favourite tv show when I was a boy - Whirlybirds - and I was quite surprised at the actor playing Dr Bob Dixon in the episode as he was a comparative unknown at the time. However he went on to world wide fame as Napoleon on his own:

I had completely forgotten Whirlybirds, used to watch every episode.

Picked up a tip or two as well - like using hot glue to anchor parts for turning, and then separate with a hot scraper.

Long before the days of hot glue guns, and going back to my school woodworking days of the '60s, I have a vague recollection of fixing a temporary wooden base (which would accept a screwed-on lathe faceplate) to the job by a woodglue joint - except that a sheet of paper (newspaper? paper towel?) was sandwiched into the glue joint, so it could be sheared away later with a chisel blow. Does this make any sense?
Wood glue then was Cascamite, so no-nonsense stuff!

Fundamentally it makes sense but I imagine you would need to wait a while for it to set!!

Oh yes - next day. My woodwork teacher was insistent that nothing much happened in a hurry. Woodwork was, after all, a gentlemanly activity, he always insisted.
He was an interesting old character, named Harold Lakin. In 1966 he was still driving a 1947 Rover Twelve (my father had a Ten, then a Sixteen), and was nicknamed Barsh by all us boys. Why? Because he jokingly threatened to barsh anyone who misbehaved. He never did: far too gentle for that!
Apart from woodwork, he taught me Technical & Engineering Drawing apace: O-level in one year, and A-level in just two terms. Results were not to be sniffed at - grade A in both cases. My only decent A-level!!

We used some glue from a heated pot that set in a couple of minutes. I suppose it was the hot glue of its time. The teacher, Mr Cordingly, always called it gleeu. He despaired of my pathetic efforts

We had a really nice science teacher, can't remember his name but he called food 'fud' and soot 'sooooot'.

I recall the bar girl being exotically beautiful. I was led to believe that it was Raquel Welch and she was married to Lloyd Bridges. All lies of course, seems she was Anna Navarro.

Surprising (and huge) cast for the series including several of Lloyd bridges' family, Mr Spock and J R Ewing to name but a few.

I mentioned that to my son, he had the bike out last week for the first time since he bought it.
He was well aware of Allen Millyard and his skills.

He brought it round here on his way home and unusually, I wondered if he had been here earlier, heard a big bike and looked out but it was someone I used to work with on a 2.2L square 4. Honda IIRC, but then again perhaps not.

I just watched that, even though I'm not a bike person.

I was starting to wonder how he was going to guarantee lining up the parts, then he stood the liners upside down and put a ruler across them.

That gave me a twinge of amusement. Ages ago I asked a friend who worked at a certain engineering establishment if there was such a thing as like a long decent straight edge. He said like a ruler? I said oh, ok.

A few days later I came in and they said that ruler Geoff brought you isn't straight, you know how we found out? We stood it on your job.

It was a metre long, and it gradually went to about a fifth of a millimetre out at one end, in about 25 cm

We've been out the last few nights and seen a few, including a stray one tonight - much brighter than the others but going in a slightly different track. They're only in view for a few minutes, but once you know what to look for, they're not too bad to see. I'm off out again in a couple of minutes to try and spot the next passing.
a note of caution though - some of the various website predictions for times of passing seem a little varied. I've got one website says they'll pass at 9.34pm tonight, and one says 10.26pm There are mutliple passes per night - but it's quite possible to see nothing at each predicted time.
