Passing the Time

I've found a new way to pass the time today, check out how many DD's you have for online services and maybe save a few pounds!! I found I have two concurrent subscriptions for AVG, one for a single device renewable in May, and one for multiple devices, up to 10, renewable in October. So I have cancelled the single device and added SWMBO's tablet to my multi-device package!! Got some brownie points too!!

Found an interesting video from a skilled woodworker today and whiled away 30 minutes. If you appreciate skilled craftsmen have a look:

Tremendous, Mick. Really enjoyed watching that.
Picked up a tip or two as well - like using hot glue to anchor parts for turning, and then separate with a hot scraper.

I have a wood lathe here, and a host of turning tools (some belonged to my grandfather). Intended pick up wood turning from where I left off at school, and have done a few bits - but nowhere near enough. No excuses, as there's a bandsaw and dust extractor too. Both of these do get regular use. Oddly, probably as much plastic has been turned on the lathe as wood! Never enough time for it all...

Glad you enjoyed it Chris. I don't have a lathe at all so I can only stand back and admire. The hot glue idea could be very useful in panel work for me though. Now I know where to come if I need to turn a leg or two!!

There has to be some sort of get-together when all this is over. XM was meant for international use, after all.

As an after-thought, ever since taking a Dyson DC-01 to pieces (failed motor), realised there was actually not a lot special about his products - except the price, that is. The design of the 'bladeless fan' is something of a con, as the blades are there ok, just out of sight. Digital motors?!? Wonder whether his ventilator will see service??

I have been very guarded about Dyson designs for a long time so the ventilator will be interesting, if it gets into service as you say. One of the best laughs I've had over the last twenty years was his invention of the "digital motor" and I am still waiting for him to produce an AC battery!!

I'd guess the 'Digital Motor' bit refers to the fact they contain electronics to rapidly switch the power to the coils around the periphery of the motor to give a more efficient / powerful motor than a conventional motor where you just apply the power and off it whirrs. The 'Digital Motor' wasn't invented by Dyson, but it's certainly been refined by them/him.

Yep, James Dyson is often referred to as an inventor, and whilst he did an awful lot to revolutionise the vacuum cleaner market, these days I think he's just a shrewd businessman.

It would be interesting to know the price of the Dyson ventilator to the NHS but I doubt we will!!

Once this coronavirus is under control, I wouldn't want to be a ventilator manufacturer as I can imagine their order books will be empty due to massive over-supply to the NHS.

My trip to Tesco this morning got me and my old friend everything I shopped for, the toilet roll and kitchen roll shelves were fully stocked and most others well stocked, didn't find any empty shelves.
