Sir Stirling Moss was arguably the greatest British racing driver of all time

As my tribute to Sir Stirling came up on the thread I realised it was my 1699th post which makes this my 1700th and what better car as my celebratory offering than one which Sir Stirling would have loved to put through its paces at Sebring or Silverstone:
A truly exciting car to drive which I was fortunate enough to do on a Road Rally in Kent.

Ahh but it's not. That 'scrap' was Santa's train at Christmas... They are now storing it against the wall ready for next ChristmasStickyfinger wrote: 13 Apr 2020, 15:20 Spoils it a bit by having a load of scrap and a recycling box in the garden.....slobs![]()

Righteoooo
With thanks to my mate up the hill and a rotten sycamore, some logging to do. Time to get the chainsaw out whilst it is still moist and get it cut up and stacked ready to split in a couple on months before it goes rock solid, will be good to go next year. This will be split and stacked for "rotation. I have 2 stacks ready to go and another will be ready for winter this year as well. Just in case there is an oil virus !

Re: Picture(s) of the day....
Don't split it! There will be wood carvers who would like a decent piece of oak to make some art with. I am not one (I can turn any wood into sawdust with nothing else of use (as my woodworking teacher could tell you) faster than anybody else in the class!), but I know that oak has value.

Absolutely . . . sacrilege! . . . Mature and split-free oak is extremely precious, and has becone more so over the years.
Remember our school woodwork store in the '60s, where there were 8ft lengths of both oak and mahogany, 15" × 3" in the rack! Long gone are those days.
This stuff doesn't grow on trees, y'know.

Re: Picture(s) of the day....
Just where do art forms and mantlepiece trinkets stand against the necessity of keeping warm?
These lumps are thick with knots and branch roots and in the main from diseased and fallen trees. Some might make interesting patterns in a bowl, but at prices most people would walk away from. Witness the craft stalls packing up their pieces at the end of another day, and the tat that people would prefer to accumulate from car boot sales.
What pieces were re-usable were set aside for future gate posts - I live on a farm (not mine).
Place your bids?

Consider also, that much of what is shaped into 'craft', gets swept up or recycled as firewood when the cleaned up portion is sliced into a turnable shape. When split to burn - nothing is wasted. This wood is unfit for furniture making, and much would be turned down for lathe work. There was some Ash in there, but held a wasps nest. They were not happy either.

I've split similar size lumps of Beech on one of those electro-hydraulic machines. It's surprising how far away from a machine you can stand whilst still operating it.
Those size logs can split a bit explosively at times
I normally process between 1 - 2 tonnes a year and those machines are a godsend

Re: Picture(s) of the day....
Agreed. I can still swing a splitting maul - and a grenade and sledge, but it's graft, the worst part is bending and picking up. Beech can be a swine with an axe.The hydraulic splitter is the business - but watch out for exploding sticks! Best bit of kit I bought.
