2.0 HDi C5 X7 knocking sound/rough idle.

Post by davoxx »

Hi,

Having a rough idle on the C5. Stopping and restarting the engine stops it until I drive again.

I think it is the ERG valve, so I want to pull it out and give it a clean.
I think it's on the front of the engine.

Any pointers?

Re: 2.0 HDi C5 X7 EGR valve - how to clean?

At the front? Dream on! :)

It's at the back of the engine - you'll need to disconnect the battery:

BSI Reset / Battery Disconnect / Reconnect Procedure

Then take the air filter box off, the air filter ducting, the the oil vapour breather pipe as well as the EGR pipe. You've then got several screws and bolts to remove at the back on the EGR, as well as the electrical connector, but you'll need a new seal if you are taking the EGR off, as the old one won't mate properly when refitting once it has been removed.

Oh, didn't know about this, where can I get just the seals? (GSF doesn't have them.)

The gaskets / seals are usually supplied with a new EGR valve. They are not listed as separate parts by PSA - but there are probably suppliers out there that provide them.

But taking a step back - is there any reason you suspect the EGR? Have you run a diagnostics session on it yet? If there is a fault code, then the system may be going into a backup mode, which restarting the engine may clear temporarily. But without knowing this it's hard to progress.

The EGR does have a self-checking mechanism - to ensure it's not sticking. But there can be other reasons like your Air Meter (MAF). There are actuator tests that can be done using Diagbox for both these. I think a diagnostic is the best place to start or you could be undertaking a lot of work for nothing to be honest.

I don't have a Diagbox, I lent mine out and never got it back :(

TBH I probably should buy another one.

I'm guessing it is the EGR, I changed the air/fuel/oil filters. I've just added injector treatment, though lockdown means I can't really go on a long trip. So I figured I might as well clean the EGR valve.

Do we know which version of the 2.0 HDi this is? on my RHH version the EGR valve is at the front of the engine. The other (140 bhp model?) it is at the back.

If its not to bad yet it may be worth trying wynns EGR cleaning spray, it's sprayed into the engine whilst its running & it cleans the EGR valve & the whole inlet track too (which the EGR valve will have made a mess off), It's worth a punt at £11 & all you need to do is take the air inlet pipe off.
Beware it sounds rough when using it, make sure you read the intructions.

Got a lend of an OBD reader, no error codes (other the on glow plug one the car has had since 3 years ago).

History to the rough idle:
I changed the oil with 5w30 castrol.

The rough idle started about three weeks after.
Starting the car, engine was not vibrating.
While driving and then standing at the lights, car would vibrate like crazy.

Changed the air filter and fuel filter + added injector cleaner.
The idle is not as rough as it was, but still there.

I'll try the spray while I look for the seals for the EGR.

Make sure your oil is a low SAPS oil (Sulphurated Ash Phosphorus Sulphur) - designed for emissions control systems, ideally fully Synthetic, something with the same properties / quality as TOTAL ACTIVA INEO ECS 5W30 or TOTAL QUARTZ INEO ECS 5W30.

Forgot to check the oil, but the issue seems to have resolved itself.

Fuel filter change + fuel treatment and some motorway and it hasn't returned in the last week (so fingers crossed).

Soooo, it's back, my horrible rattle sound. Thought the clutch bearing was the culprit, but then it disappeared (for 2 days) before returning ... and then disappearing again!!!

1. after a longish drive while reversing the car, there was a 'clunk' and car stalled.
2. restarting the car and the noise was heard, but the noise stopped when rev'd above approx 1800 revs and returns below that.
pressing the clutch did not stop the noise and vibrations came up the pedal.
3. towed back, noise was still there until a restart when trying to park it and noise gone.
4. took for a spin, noise started to become louder, clutch pedal was vibrating.
5. noise got worse as arrived home - stopped and started car but noise was still there, recorded the this vid ->
6. stopped car and restarted it a few mins later to show someone the noise, and it was gone, but the engine did seem to be running rough.

no fault codes as per my obd reader.

I wonder (hope) if it is not clutch related as that would cost 1500!!!
