2006 C5 1.6HDI Speedometer Problem

Post by mark2256 »

Hi All I have not been on here for a while. But have just discovered a problem on my car. I have to collect a purchase today from Stansted. Which meant going round the M25, so I decided to set the cruise control. I was travelling about 60 MPH the same as a lorry I was following. So set the cruise control and which said 60 MPH the noticed the speedometer said I was only doing 50 MPH. As there was nothing else behind me I dropped the speed on the cruise control down to 50 MPH and the speedo dropped to 40 MPH.

Could this be being caused by a faulty wheel sensor or is it a speedo problem?

There can be some variation - but the speedo can read about 5% faster (max permitted) that actual speed but not lower (to stop you speeding).

There are also a couple of things that could be an issue:

With the ignition off, does the speedo needle rest lower than the rev counter needle? These can sometimes fail and need replacing.
The other issue (which is the least likely) is that there is a small amount of adjustment between the cruise setting and the actual speed - usually a few MPH. But if yours is 10 MPH out then that is a bit too much, so I would check the speedo side first.

Here's a video on how to change it and shows the problems:

Thank You for the reply. I checked the speed I am going using a sat nav this morning, when the speedo reads 20MPH the sat nav show I am doing 30 MPH. With the cruise control engaged at 50 MPH sat nav shows 50 MPH and speedo shows 40 MPH so problems lie with in the speedo.

As it's 10mph out at different speeds (and not a percentage error) it's simply (!) a matter of repositioning the speedo needle.

The fact that the speedo needle has slipped is indicative that it’s not reliable and probably needs replacing - either that or the stepper motor behind it as in the video. It’s not worth taking the chance that it will happen again and you get copped for Speeding....
