Re: Coping With Covid
Further to James' reasoned post above, I think it worth pointing out that a " 'flu like pandemic" has been on the cards for decades. Our government has been planning for this sort of scenario for many many years. Their trouble is that they had no way of knowing when it would come (year / month / season), what its epidemiology would be, in what state the UK's economy would be, and countless other variables.
They can't sensibly stockpile millions / billions of items of PPE 'just in case'*. They can't have tens of thousands of items of major medical equipment sitting on the shelf 'just in case'*. They can, however, plan on what to do - and that is what they've done for years. The 'Nightingale Hospitals' would be part of that plan i.e. they knew they would need them, they knew what type of buildings they would need, but they couldn't know how many they needed, nor how many beds would be needed**. The use of the MOD in the form of MACA https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Military_ ... uthorities has been a long standing resource for use in such times as a 'flu pandemic. One of the major tenets of the government's 'flu planning is that (and has been for many years) they will react as things develop - and we can see this happening on a daily basis. There is no other sensible way for them to operate - this is a novel (new) virus.
*- PPE has a shelf life, equipment needs to be properly stored, serviced, tested, and becomes obsolete.
**- If anyone knows where the thousands of beds they're utilising for the Nightingale Hospitals have been stored all these years, I'd love to know !

Re: Coping With Covid
Mr Johnson is holding his own after the critical 24 hour period I hope he recovers.
It should be a lesson to the people hanging around in parks and beaches, anyone can catch this, nobody is safe.
I am starting to think that governments have to ban the sale of alcohol during this crises. I dunno about the UK but in Ireland house parties, shed parties BBQ's beach parties are going on daily. No force can possibly police parties but they can police off licences and supermarkets, booze isn't essential and I'm a drinker myself.
There's little any of us can do other than isolate wash hands regularly and ride it out. Fires need oxygen to survive the virus needs new people. Stay safe.

Re: Coping With Covid
The fact that the Prime Minister is just on CPAP (for his breathing; obviously he will also be on other medical support to allow his immune system to get on with combating COVID 19) is good news. It means that (should this be the most medical support he requires) he should fully recover within a few months. Should he require the support of a ventilator it becomes far more serious (as he will need to be sedated so the breathing tubes can be inserted into his lungs and then kept in an induced coma for however long it is required), and, should he survive this, it will take far longer for him to fully recover.
You may be wondering why I am continually referring to COVID 19. It is very simple; COVID 19 is just one of the Coronavirus 'family'. Just as there are numerous strains of influenza there are also several strains of Coronavirus.

Re: Coping With Covid
Just now, on the BBC Breakfast, they were interviewing a man who had just survived COVID 19 (Hylton Murray-Philipson). One of the most moving parts was that, as he left the ward, he was applauded by all of the nurses on the ward. They need a success story far more than our applause (and they need THAT even more than ever).

Re: Coping With Covid
There is, on MSN, a map that shows the number of COVID 19 cases as they are distributed across the UK;

John Prine died of C-19. Every so often something occurs and your life becomes a little darker,

Most people have a personal soundtrack to their lives. Mine features a lot of John Prine songs.

Re: Coping With Covid
One thing that seems to have been forgotten in this time of crisis is road sense. I have seen vehicles travelling through red lights and speeding through towns, and I have also seen pedestrians stepping out into the road (to remain two or more meters away from another pedestrian) and then have a slanging match with the bus driver who had to make an emergency stop because an idiot stepped out into the road without looking.
Please be careful when you are out and about on (or near to) the roads. A bus in the back will kill you quicker than COVID 19 will, and it will be your stupidity that brought about your death.

Re: Coping With Covid
Not to mention that causing a bus driver to do an emergency stop could easily cause injury to passengers and result in unnecessary loading on the NHS.
Think of others as well as yourself when out on exercise.
